More than 5.9 million tourist arrivals and almost 15.7 million overnight stays were recorded in Slovenia in 2018. Foreign tourists generated 11.2 million overnight stays, which is 15% more than in 2017. Domestic tourists generated 4.5 million overnight stays, which is about the same as in 2017.
Almost 15.7 million tourist overnight stays
In 2018, the highest numbers of tourist arrivals and overnight stays ever were recorded; more than 5,933,000 tourist arrivals were registered in tourist accommodation establishments, which is 8% more than in 2017. Tourists spent almost 15,695,000 nights, which is 10% more than in 2017.
Foreign tourists generated more than 4,425,000 arrivals and over 11,176,000 overnight stays (11% more arrivals and 15% more overnight stays than in 2017). This means that compared to 2017, in 2018 on average every day 4,084 more foreign tourist overnight stays were recorded.
Almost no growth in stays in accommodation establishments was recorded for domestic tourists: they generated more than 1,508,000 arrivals and almost 4,519,000 overnight stays which in comparison with 2017 makes a difference of less than one percent.
The share of overnight stays generated by foreign tourists increased to over 70%
The share of foreign overnight stays in the total number of overnight stays has been constantly increasing since 2010: in 2010 foreign tourists generated 56% of all overnight stays, in 2015 64%, in 2017 68% and in 2018 71%.
In 2018 foreign tourists from all key markets generated more overnight stays than in 2017
Key markets, from which the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded, were Germany (12% or almost 1.4 million overnight stays), Italy (12%), Austria (9%), the Netherlands and Croatia (5% each).
Tourists from important tourism markets which generated more overnight stays than in 2017 were tourists from the Netherlands by 22% more, from Germany 17% more, from Croatia 16% more, from Austria 4% more, and from Italy 1% more.
The highest number of overnight stays by tourists from non-European countries generated by tourists from the USA
Tourists from the USA were the ones who generated the most overnight stays from non-European countries. They generated 3% of all foreign tourists overnight stays. Compared to 2017 they increased the number of generated overnight stays by 24%. The USA were followed by the turists from other Asian countries, Israel, the Republic of Korea, and China.
Mountain resorts in top spot in 2018
In 2018, the highest number of overnight stays of all tourists was recorded in mountain resorts, more than 4,489,000 (29% of all overnight stays) or 14% more than in 2017, followed by health (spa) resorts, where almost 3,486,000 overnight stays were recorded (22% of all overnight stays) or roughly the same number as in 2017. Seaside resorts (19% of all overnight stays) recorded an increase (by 7%), and municipality Ljubljana (14% of all overnight stays) recorded a 22% increase in the number of overnight stays.
Foreign tourists generated the most overnight stays (32% of foreign overnight stays) in mountain resorts, while the domestic tourists did so in health (spa) resorts (39% of domestic overnight stays).
Tourists stayed most frequently in hotels and similar accommodation establishments
53% of all overnight stays were generated in hotels and similar accommodation establishments. On average tourists spent 2.6 nights which equals the average number of nights spent by all tourists in Slovenia in 2018. The longest average stay was the stay in health (spa) resorts and it lasted 3.5 nights.
More than a half of overnight stays generated by tourists recorded in only seven municipalities
In 2018, (domestic and foreign) tourists generated the most overnight stays in municipality Ljubljana (14%), followed by municipality Piran/Pirano (12%) and municipality Bled (7%). In these three municipalities almost a quarter of all tourist overnight stays was generated. The other four (which alltogether represented the remaining 27%) were Kranjska Gora, Brežice, Bohinj and Moravske toplice.
Foreign tourists generated the most overnight stays in municipalities Ljubljana (18% of all foreign tourist overnight stays), Piran/Pirano (12%) and Bled (10%).
Domestic tourists on the other hand generated the most of their overnight stays in municipalities Piran/Pirano (13 %), Izola/Isola (7 %) and Moravske Toplice (6 %).
In 2018 more than 100,000 tourist overnight stays were recorded in 33 Slovenian municipalities (in 2017 in 30 municipalities).
New data sources and methodology update
In 2018 the data source for the arrivals and overnight stays survey was changed and we started using the Register of accommodation establishments and electronic system for data reporting in tourism “eTurism”. Due to the change in data sources, also the methodology was updated. Provisional monthly data for 2018 were not comparable to the monthly data published prior to 2018. Most of the data for the 2010–2017 period were recalculated and are now comparable with both the 2018 monthly and anual data. We have yet to finish with the recalculations and will continue to work towards publishing the remaining data recalculations.

Because from 2018 on the survey on tourist arrivals and overnight stays is conducted in line with the updated methodology and on the basis of new data sources, data on tourist arrivals and overnight stays and on tourist accommodation capacities for the 2010–2017 period were recalculated and newly estimated according to the new survey methodology introduced in 2018 (full coverage of accommodation establishments on a monthly basis). Recalculation of data for 2017 is based on micro data by using imputation procedures at the level of individual units (accommodation establishments) for the missing part of the population. New estimates for the 2010–2016 period were made by adequate model at the macro level (aggregates at the lowest level of particular domains).
Absolute data do not always add up due to rounding in the computation model.
