The total number of hours worked continues to increase in the year-on-year comparison

In Slovenia 4.4% more hours were worked in the 4th quarter of 2018 than in the 4th quarter of 2017 (mainly due to more persons in paid employment and more working days). In 2018, the highest average monthly number of hours was worked by persons employed in human health and social work activities.

2.7% more hours worked in 2018 than in 2017
In the 4th quarter of 2018 persons in paid employment in Slovenia worked 313.7 million hours, which is 4.4% more than in the same period of 2017. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2017, the total number of hours worked increased mainly due to more persons in paid employment and more working days.

An increase in the total number of hours worked was observed also at the annual level; in total 1,190.8 million hours were worked in 2018, which is 2.7% more than in 2017. The share of hours worked in paid hours in this period amounted to 78.3%.

The highest average monthly number of hours worked by persons employed in human health and social work activities
In the 4th quarter of 2018 a person in paid employment in Slovenia worked a monthly average of 135 hours, which is 0.9% more than in the same period of 2017. The main reason for this was more working days. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2017, the average monthly number of hours worked by a person in paid employment increased the most in education (by 3.3%).

On the other hand, in the whole year 2018 a person in paid employment in Slovenia worked on average 1.1% fewer hours than in 2017, mainly due to more public holidays (non-working days).

In the 4th quarter of 2018 and also in the whole year 2018 the largest number of hours was worked by persons employed in human health and social work activities; on average 141 hours per month in the 4th quarter of 2018 and 135 hours per month (or 5 hours per month more than the national average) in the whole year 2018. The main reason for this level of average monthly hours worked in human health and social work activities was the fact that persons employed in this activity worked on average the most paid and unpaid overtime hours.
 
The largest increase in the total number of hours worked in construction
In the 4th quarter of 2018 the largest increase in the total number of hours worked compared to the same period of 2017 was observed in construction (by 10.8%), followed by the increase in transportation and storage (by 8.9%). The main reason for the increase in the total number of hours worked in both activities is more persons in paid employment.

Similar observations as for the 4th quarter of 2018 apply also for the whole year 2018.
