Yield forecast of late crops, late fruit and grapes, Slovenia, 2018
High yield of maize for grain (9 t/ha), and abundant yields of apples (34.9 t/ha) and pears (23.4 t/ha)
The data on the yield forecast as of 5 September 2018 indicate this year’s yield of all late crops, fruits and grapes is going to be good. Altogether almost 129,000 tons of apples, 16,000 tons of pears and 128,000 tons of grapes will be harvested.
High output of maize for grain and silage maize is expected
Compared to the already published data on expected yield of maize for grain and silage maize as of 31 July 2018, the data on the yield forecast as of 5 September 2018 indicate good output of this crop in Slovenia. Compared to the last year’s low output 24% higher output of maize (337,232 tons) is expected on the area comparable to 2017. According to the latest data, the expected average yield is 9 tons of maize for grain per hectare. Silage maize output is also going to be higher. The expected average yield of silage maize is 47.1 tons per hectare and thus 16% higher than last year. Compared to the last ten-year average this is 8% more.
Good late potato output
The data on the yield forecast as of 5 September 2018 indicate higher late potato output than last year. According to data on area sown, the area for late potato production decreased by 11% (2,326 hectares) so output will be 4% lower than last year (63,557 tons). The expected average yield of 27.3 tons per hectare is 8% higher than the last ten-year average.
High yield of oil plants is expected
Oil plant output is expected to be very good in this year. Highest average yield is expected by sunflowers (2.6 tons per hectare), which is 50% higher than last year and 22% higher than the last ten-year average. The total output of sunflowers should be about 755 tons.
The area of pumpkins for oil was smaller than last year (by 18%). Producers of pumpkins for oil should harvest 2,482 tons of pumpkin seeds, which is similar to the year before. The average yield of 0.7 tons per hectare is 21% higher than the last year’s low output.
Soya has been cultivated on just over 1,700 hectares or almost 40% less than in the previous year (1,164 hectares less), so lower output is expected. The average yield of 2.8 tons per hectare is 7% higher than last year; nevertheless, the expected total output of soya is 36% lower than a year before (4,937 tons).
High output of hops
From slightly larger area (by 5%), hop producers in Slovenia are expected to harvest 27% more hops than in the previous year (2,740 tons). The expected average yield of 1.6 tons per hectare is about 10% higher than the last ten-year average.
Record harvest of late fruits
As regards apples and pears, which are important late fruit species in Slovenia, in orchard plantations and in extensive orchards record output is expected. Fruit producers are expected to harvest almost six times more apples from orchard plantations than a year before.
The expected average yield of 34.9 tons of apples per hectare in orchard plantations is 43% higher than the last ten-year average. Altogether almost 81,193 tons of apples will be harvested from orchard plantations. In extensive orchards high average yield of apples is also expected. The expected average yield is 67 kg of apples per tree (seven times more than last year). Fruit producers are expected to harvest 47,586 tons of apples in extensive orchards.
The expected average yield of pears in orchard plantations, which is 23.4 tons per hectare, is four times higher than in the previous year. The data on the yield forecast as of 5 September 2018 indicate that 4,911 tons of pears should be harvested in orchard plantations. In extensive orchards, record output of pears is expected. The expected average yield of pears (45.5 kg per tree) is 75% higher than the last ten-year average. Altogether 11,000 tons of pears should be harvested from extensive orchards.
Excellent harvest of plums is expected in extensive orchards. Average yield should be five times higher than the year before (24.6 kg per tree), which is almost double the last ten-year average.
Good output of American blueberries (4.8 tons per hectare) and raspberries (6.2 tons per hectare) is expected in orchards plantations.
Record output of grapes
According to the yield forecast as of 5 September 2018, this year’s total output of grapes (128,347 tons) is the highest since 1991. The expected average yield of grapes of 8.2 tons per hectare is 45% higher than in the previous year and 30% higher than the last ten-year average. Red grape varieties yielded better (8.6 tons per hectare, in total 41,295 tons) than white grape varieties (8 tons per hectare, in total 87,052 tons).
