65% of enterprises in the accommodation sector with 10 or more persons employed and a website provided online booking via their website. In 2017 almost 8.6 million overnight stays of foreign tourists who spent almost EUR 2.4 billion were recorded in Slovenia.
On the initiative of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) 27 September has been celebrated as the World Tourism Day since 1979. The theme of this year's World Tourism Day is »Tourism and Digital Transformation«.
Development of the information and communication technologies (ICT) has transformed the way of spending leisure time, vacations, there are new ways of connection and getting information on disposal. Digital development should encourage innovations and contribute to the strategies of sustainable tourism growth.
Usage of ICT in business operations of enterprises in the accommodation sector
According to the results of the statistical survey on the usage of ICT in enterprises, enterprises in the accommodation sector are more advanced as regards the use of ICT in their business. In 2017, 83% of enterprises in Slovenia had a website; in the accommodation sector 94% of enterprises. Due to operation in the international environment, 92% of enterprises in the accommodation sector had their website translated into several languages. Only 19% of enterprises provided online ordering, reservation or booking through their website; among enterprises in the accommodation sector 65%.
84% of enterprises in the accommodation sector in 2017 were using social media, such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc. They were using social media mostly for development of enterprise's image or for marketing products or services offered (87%) and for obtaining or responding to customer opinions, reviews, questions (73%).
Enterprises in the accommodation sector with 10 or more persons employed in 2016 made 15% of their value of turnover by reservations via website. 62% of this value of sales was made via intermediary platforms, 38% via received reservations on the enterprise website.
Tourists also increasingly use ICT when organizing their trips
82% of foreign tourists who visited Slovenia in July or August 2015 and spent the night in hotels or camping sites used the Internet for organizing the trip. They mostly used the Internet to get information with reference to the trip (48%), to book accommodation (29%) and to pay for the accommodation (7%). More and more tourists decide for the trip according to the presentation and promotion of tourist destination on the Internet or according to the opinion and experience of other travellers on the Internet. More than a fifth (21%) of foreign tourists stated that websites of Slovenia or places in Slovenia were the source of information that influenced them to visit Slovenia, while 8% informed themselves about Slovenia on social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
EU residents to a high degree use the Internet for organizing their trips. The latest available Eurostat data for 2014 show that for 67% of trips made by airplane they booked the airplane ticket online (residents of Slovenia for 63% of such trips). For 55% of trips in rented accommodation the accommodation was booked online (residents of Slovenia for 35% of such trips).
Between April 2016 and March 2017, 49% of residents of Slovenia aged 16–74 years who are regular Internet users (used the Internet in the last 3 months before the interview) used the Internet with the purpose of using services related to travel and accommodation. The share of those who used the Internet with the purpose of using services related to travel and accommodation was the highest in the age group 25–34 years (59%) and the lowest in the age group 55–64 (36%).
Among regular Internet users 58% purchased online (bought or ordered a product or a service). Among e-buyers a quarter arranged holiday accommodation online, and 14% purchased online other travel arrangements (plane tickets, hired cars).
The export of travel contributed a third to the export of services in the balance of payments of Slovenia
Foreign tourists generated almost 8.6 million overnight stays, 17% more than in 2016. According to the data of the Bank of Slovenia, revenues from tourism, i.e. the export of travel, in 2017 amounted to EUR 2.389 billion, 9% more than in 2016. In the 2003–2017 period the value of the export of travel doubled. In 2017 tourism in Slovenia contributed a third to the total export of services, tourism turnover per capita was around EUR 1,160.
Tourism expenditure of domestic population abroad, i.e. the import of travel, in 2017 amounted to EUR 881 million, so the value of the consumption of Slovene residents abroad increased by 3% compared to 2016. Tourist outflow in Slovenia amounted to about EUR 430 per capita.
The trade surplus in travel in 2017 amounted to EUR 1.5 billion; it was 13% higher than in 2016.
In 2017, 1.3 billion international tourist arrivals
According to the World Tourism Organization data, 1,323 million international tourist arrivals were recorded in 2017 (7% more than a year before). With 671 million international tourist arrivals Europe is still the leading world region regarding international tourist arrivals; it was visited by 51% of all tourists who travelled outside their countries in 2017. The Asia and Pacific region followed with 323 million (24% of all) international tourist arrivals. The highest increase in tourist arrivals was recorded in Africa (9% growth), followed by Europe (8% growth) and the Asia and Pacific region, which recorded a 6% growth. 2017 was the record tourism year also as regards revenues from international travels; these amounted to as much as USD 1,332 billion (5% more than a year earlier).
