In 2016, public expenditure for formal education in Slovenia amounted to EUR 1,938 million

Public expenditure for formal education in 2016 amounted to EUR 1,938 million or 4.8% of GDP. 95% of total public expenditure was allocated directly to educational institutions, while 5% was public transfers to households and other private entities (EUR 92 million). The highest share of public expenditure for education was spent for basic education (44%), followed by tertiary education (20%).

Total, public, private and international expenditure on educational institutions in 2016 amounted to 5.3% of GDP

In 2016 EUR 2,158 million was spent for educational institutions. 86% of expenditure for educational institutions was public expenditure, 13% was private expenditure and 1% was funds from international sources.

In the structure of total expenditure on educational institutions expenditure for preschool education (1st and 2nd age period in kindergartens) represents 20%, for basic education 44%, for upper secondary education 17%, and for tertiary education 19%.

Educational institutions spent EUR 2.2 billion on current and capital expenditure in 2016

Current expenditure on educational institutions in 2016 amounted to EUR 2,077 million or 94% of total expenditure (of which 76% was expenditure for wages and salaries); the remaining 6% (EUR 133 million) was capital expenditure. In the structure of spending of educational institutions capital expenditure was 2 percentage points lower than in the previous year.
