Tourism travels of domestic population, Slovenia, 2016

In 2016 two-thirds of Slovenian residents went on private trips

In 2016 around 1,170,000 persons aged 15 years or more went on at least one private trip. During this period they made around 4,056,000 private trips. Almost half of these trips were made in the 3rd quarter (between the beginning of July and the end of September).

Two-thirds of Slovenian residents went on private trips
In 2016 around 1,170,000 persons or 67% of the total resident population aged 15 years or more went on at least one private trip, which is 4 percentage points more than in the 2015. They went on around 4,056,000 private trips, of which 60% were made abroad. The most visited foreign destination was Croatia (66% of all private trips made abroad), followed by Italy (5%), Austria (4%) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (4%). Private trips involved on average 4.9 overnight stays (3.0 overnight stays in Slovenia and 6.1 abroad). Private trip participants spent on average around EUR 44 per person per day (EUR 36 on private trips in Slovenia, EUR 46 on private trips abroad). 

Almost half of all private trips in 2016 were made in the 3rd quarter
Most private trips – 1,849,000 or 46% of all private trips in 2016 – were made in the 3rd quarter (from the beginning of July until the end of September). The 3rd quarter was also the only quarter with more longer (at least 4 nights) than shorter trips (1 to 3 nights) (58% longer, 42% shorter trips). In the 2nd quarter tourists went on around 941,000 private trips (or 23% of all private trips in 2016). Third – regarding the number of private trips – was the 4th quarter (676,000 or 17% of all). The fewest private trips were made in the 1st quarter (591,000 or 15% of all).

On almost half of all private trips tourists stayed in non-rented accommodations 
On 55% of the private trips tourists stayed in rented accommodations (hotels, campsites or other rented accommodations), while on 45% of private trips tourists stayed in non-rented accommodations (at friends and relatives or in own secondary homes). Tourists staying in a hotel or a similar establishment spent daily on average the most (EUR 82) and tourists staying in their own secondary homes the least (EUR 20).

Business trip participants mostly travelled abroad
In 2016, 204,000 or 12% of the Slovenian residents aged 15 years or more went on at least one business or study trip (same as in 2015). They went on around 517,000 business trips all together. 81% of business trips were made abroad, mostly in Germany (15% of business trips abroad). Business trips involved on average 3.2 overnight stays (1.9 overnight stays in Slovenia and 3.5 abroad). Business trip participants spent on average around EUR 177 per person per day (EUR 122 on business trips in Slovenia, EUR 184 on business trips abroad).
