Tourist overnight stays continue to grow in 2017; in January 5% more tourist overnight stays than in January 2016

Compared to January 2016, 8% more tourist arrivals and 5% more overnight stays were registered in January 2017. Domestic tourists generated 37% of all overnight stays. Among foreign tourists most overnight stays were generated by Italian and Croatian tourists.

In January 2017 more foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays than in January 2016
In January 2017, almost 231,000 tourist arrivals and more than 627,000 overnight stays were registered in tourist accommodations, which is 8% more tourist arrivals and 5% more tourist overnight stays than in January 2016. In the same comparison arrivals of domestic tourists increased by 1% and their overnight stays fell by 3%. Arrivals and overnight stays of foreign tourists increased; arrivals by 13% and overnight stays by 10%.  

A quarter of foreign tourist overnight stays were generated by tourists from Italy and more than a fifth by tourists from Croatia
In January 2017 foreign tourists generated 63% of tourist overnight stays in Slovenia. Key markets, from which the most overnight stays of foreign tourists in Slovenia were registered, were Italy (25%), Croatia (22%), Austria (9%), Serbia (6%), the Russian Federation and Bosnia and Herzegovina (4% from each).

Tourists from the Russian Federation generated 23% more, from Bosnia and Herzegovina 22% more, from Croatia 19% more, from Austria 10% more, from Serbia 2% more and from Italy 1% more overnight stays than in January 2016.

Hotel rooms 46% occupied
In January 2017, almost 33,000 units (rooms, apartments, houses, cottages, bungalows, places for camping, moorings for boats) with almost 87,000 bedplaces were available to tourists in Slovenia. In January 2017, 47% of all tourist bedplaces (permanent and auxiliary) were available to tourists in hotels, 12% in camping sites and 8% in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings. Permanent bedplaces in hotels were on average occupied 44% and hotel rooms 46% (net occupancy), which is 2 percentage points higher than in the same period last year.

In January 2017, 73% of tourist overnight stays were recorded in hotels, 6% in dwellings and apartment settlements, 5% in private accommodations – rented rooms, dwellings and 3% in camping sites. Compared to January 2016, the number of overnight stays increased in hotels (by 7%) and in private accommodations – rented rooms, dwellings (by 4%) and decreased in apartment settlements and in camping sites (in each by 7%).

In all types of municipalities increase in tourist overnight stays
In January 2017, the highest number of tourist overnight stays (38% or more than 237,000) was recorded in health (spa) resorts, followed by mountain resorts with 28% overnight stays.

Compared to January 2016, in municipality Ljubljana the number of tourist overnight stays increased by 10%, in mountain resorts by 8%, in seaside resorts by 4% and in health (spa) resorts by 2%.

46% of all tourist overnight stays were recorded in municipalities Kranjska Gora, Ljubljana, Piran, Brežice, Moravske Toplice and Zreče.
