Usage of internet in households and by individuals, Slovenia, 2016

75% of persons aged 16–74 used the Internet in the first quarter of 2016; 55% used it via mobile or smart phone

In the first quarter of 2016, 75% of persons aged 16–74 years used the Internet; 64% every day or almost every day. Younger generations most often use the Internet via mobile or smart phone.

Three quarters of persons aged 16–74 years use the Internet regularly
In the first quarter of 2016, 75% of persons aged 16–74 years used the Internet (regular Internet users) (73% in 2015). 64% used the Internet every day or almost every day (61% in 2015).

The Internet is used by almost all persons up to the age group 35–44 years. From the age group 45–54 years onwards (where 78% of persons regularly used the Internet) Internet usage declines. The Internet was used by 52% of persons aged 55–64 years and by 29% of persons aged 65–74 years.

In the same period the Internet was used by 80% of persons aged 16–74 in Zahodna Slovenija (69% every day or almost every day) and by 72% of persons aged 16–74 in Vzhodna Slovenija (60% every day or almost every day).

Usage of Internet via mobile or smart phone predominates in younger generations
In the first quarter of 2016 persons aged 16–74 years most often used the Internet via mobile or smart phone (55%). Usage via laptop computer follows with 53%; 43% used the Internet via desktop computer, 22% via tablet computer and 13% via Smart TV. 3% of persons used other mobile devices, e.g. media or game players, e-book reader, smart watch, etc., for Internet usage.  

Internet usage via mobile or smart phone was the highest among persons aged 16–24 and 25–34 years (91%), followed by persons aged 35–44 years (74%) and the lowest among persons aged 65–74 years (7%). The Internet was used via portable computer most often by persons aged 25–34 years (77%) and via tablet computer by persons aged 35–44 years (39%). Usage of Internet via desktop computer was the highest among persons aged 35–44 years (57%). Other mobile devices were used most often for accessing the Internet by person aged 16–24 years (6%).

In elderly generations usage of Internet via desktop (31% 55–64-year-olds; 16% 65–74-year-olds) or via portable computer (31% 55–64-year-olds; 16% 65–74-year-olds) predominated.

Usage of Internet via Smart TV
In the first quarter of 2016, 13% of persons aged 16–74 years used the Internet via Smart TV. Persons who used the Internet via Smart TV most often watched Internet streamed TV (live or catch-up) (76%); 60% watched video content on demand or from sharing services, e.g. YouTube, 45% browsed the Internet through a browser app and 31% used other apps, e.g. Skype, Facebook, games, etc.

The usage of Internet for communication, entertainment, financial activities and learning
In the first quarter of 2016, 32% of persons aged 16–74 years telephoned or made video calls (via webcam) over the Internet and 38% participated in social networks.

36% of persons listened to music (e.g. web radio, music streaming) over the Internet and 48% watched video content from sharing services, e.g. YouTube. 24% of persons used the Internet for watching Internet streamed TV (live or catch-up) from TV broadcasters, and 13% for watching video on demand (video streaming) from commercial services (e.g. movies, series).

35% of persons aged 16–74 years used Internet banking and 9% used or opened a payment account, e.g. PayPal, to pay for goods or services purchased over the Internet.

15% of persons used the Internet for learning activities, e.g. doing an online course (3%), using online learning material (13%) or communicating with instructors or students via educational websites or portals (6%).

Access to the Internet in households via optical fibre is increasing
In the first quarter of 2016, 78% of households had access to the Internet. 29% of households with Internet access used the Internet via optical fibre connections (24% in 2015). 72% of those households had access to the Internet via mobile broadband connection (69% in 2015).

Households without Internet access, there were 22% of them, stated as the most important reason that they don't need it (65%).
