On 1 January 2016 Slovenia had a population of 2,064,188 or 1,314 more than one year earlier. The number of Slovene citizens decreased while the number of foreign citizens increased and reached 5.2%.

Fewer citizens of Slovenia, more foreign citizens

According to the Statistical Office of Slovenia, the population of Slovenia increased by just over 1,300 in 2015. The number of citizens of Slovenia decreased by 4,900 (0.3%), while the number of foreign citizens increased by 6,200 (6.1%). On 1 January 2016 the 107,766 foreign citizens represented 5.2% of Slovenia’s population.


Increasing share of women among foreign citizens

On 1 January 2016 the population of Slovenia consisted of 1,023,333 men and 1,040,855 women. The share of women among citizens of Slovenia was 51.3% (this share has been slowly decreasing for a number of years); among foreign citizens there were 34.6% women (their share has increased by 3.8 percentage points in the last four years).
