Public expenditure for formal education in 2014 amounted to EUR 1,991 million or 5.3% of GDP. 96% of total public expenditure was allocated directly to educational institutions, while 4% was public transfers to households and other private entities (EUR 87 million). The share of public expenditure for education was the highest in basic education (43%) and in tertiary education (20%).
Total, public, private and international expenditure on educational institutions in 2014 amounted to 5.9% of GDP
In 2014 EUR 2,207 million or 5.9% of GDP was spent for educational institutions. 86% of expenditure for educational institutions was public expenditure, slightly less than 13% was private expenditure and almost 1% was funds from international sources.
In the structure of total expenditure on educational institutions expenditure for preschool education (1st and 2nd age period in kindergartens) represents 22%, for basic education 43%, for upper secondary education 16%, and for tertiary education 19% (of which 1% for higher vocational education and 18% for professional higher education).
Educational institutions spent EUR 2,300 million in 2014
Current expenditure on educational institutions in 2014 amounted to EUR 2,018 million or 88% of total expenditure (of which 75% was expenditure for wages and salaries); the remaining 12% (EUR 282 million) was capital expenditure.
