12,064 acknowledgments of paternity

Slovenia is among EU-28 Member States a country with a high share of children born each year to unmarried mothers (58.3% in 2014). This is the reason why the number of acknowledgments of paternity is increasing; especially high is the share of acknowledgments before the birth of a child. In 2014, 12,064 acknowledgments were registered (72 more than a year before). In 76% of cases (the highest share so far) children were acknowledged before birth. In the first month after birth additional 19% of acknowledgments were registered. 158 children were older than one year; the oldest were aged 40 years or more.

Fathers who acknowledged paternity were on average 33.1 years old; the oldest of them were aged 70 years or more.

45 adoptions – 2 more than a year before

In 2014, 45 adoptions were recorded in Slovenia, two more than a year before. 31 adopted children lived in Slovenia, and 14 children (one less as in 2013) were adopted from abroad. The majority of children adopted from abroad (5) were born in the Russian Federation, 6 children came to Slovenia from three African countries. With the independence of Slovenia the possibility to adopt a child from countries on the territory of former Yugoslavia was reduced and no child was adopted last year from those countries. Three out of four children adopted  from abroad were younger than 5 years.

In 25 cases (among 45 adoptions) the child was adopted by a couple and got both new parents. In 18 cases a child was adopted by a spouse/partner of the child’s parent.
