Significant influence on the Slovenian economy

In 2023, fewer than 1% of all enterprises in the Slovenian economy were domestic affiliates of multinational enterprise groups under domestic control. However, they generated almost a quarter of total turnover and employed more than a tenth of all employees and self-employed persons.

In terms of the number of units, generated turnover and employment, the influence of observed units (NACE Rev. 2 sections B to N and P to S) was the largest in manufacturing (C), electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (D), wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (G), transportation and storage (H), and professional, scientific and technical activities (M).

Number of units up

In the observed year, in almost all sections of activity (except in section S – other services activities) the number of observed units was higher than in the previous year. It increased over the previous year to 1,518 units.

The largest increase was recorded in section M, which also had the largest number of units out of all sectons of activity (291 units). In terms of the number of units, sections G (269 units) and C (264 units), together with section M, represent more than half of all observed units.

Slightly lower turnover

In the observed year, these enterprises recorded a slightly lower volume of generated turnover than the year before, albeit their contribution to the Slovenian economy was still significant. At the annual level, a 2.7% decrease in the volume of generated turnover was recorded, to which units from sections G and D contributed the most, as they recorded a lower volume of generated turnover than the year before. Units from other sections recorded a larger turnover than the year before.

In terms of value, units from sections G (EUR 10.7 billion), D (EUR 10.3 billion) and C (EUR 9.4 billion) contributed the most, as they account for more than three quarters of the total volume of generated turnover of these enterprises.

At the level of divisions in NACE section C (lower level – more detailed), a higher volume of generated turnover was recorded than the year before in most divisions. The highest annual turnover growth (by 42.4%) was recorded in manufacture of textiles, of wearing apparel and of leather and related products. On the other hand, the highest decrease (by 26.3%) was recorded in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products.

Slightly more employees and self-employed persons

More than a tenth of all employed and self-employed persons in Slovenia were recorded in the observed units, as they collectively employed more than 105,000 people. Compared to the year before, a 6.3% growth was recorded.

Section C contributed almost half of the total number of employees and self-employed persons, and the share remained roughly the same as the year before. Sections G and H followed with about a tenth of the total number of employed and self-employed persons in the observed units. In the former it grew by 11.56% and in the latter by 9.03%.

At the level of divisions in NACE section C, a slightly higher number of employees and self-employed persons than the year before was recorded. The highest annual growth (by 44.5%) was recorded in manufacture of textiles, of wearing apparel and of leather and related products. Similar to the year before, in manufacture of basic metals, and manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment and division of manufacture of electrical equipment contributed the largest share to the total number of employed and self-employed persons in section C, in total just over 36%.
