GDP up by 1.7% in the third quarter of 2025

In the third quarter of 2025, GDP grew by 1.7%, and by 0.7% from January to September of this year compared to the same period of 2024.

Growth in private consumption

Private consumption had a positive impact on economic activity in Slovenia. It increased by 1.0% in the third quarter. Expenditure for purchases of households on the domestic market went up in three out of four product groups, most significantly in durable goods (by 2.6%), followed by services (by 2.1%) and semi-durable goods (by 0.1%). Only expenditure for non-durable goods went down (by 1.2%).

Expenditure of general government for final consumption increased by 1.2%, mostly due to higher individual consumption (up by 2.1%). On the other hand, general government's expenditure for collective consumption decreased by 0.4%.

In total, final consumption expenditure increased by 1.0%.

Gross capital formation up 

Gross capital formation went up by 12.2% in total and contributed 2.4 p.p. to GDP growth. 

Gross fixed capital formation increased by 9.1%, which is the highest growth in the last 15 quarters. High growth is mainly due to the increased investments in buildings and structures (contributing 2.0 p.p. to GDP growth).

Investments in buildings and structures grew by 20.4%, among which investment in non-residential buildings and structures grew significantly (up by 31.4%, contributing 2.2 p.p. to GDP growth). Investment in residential buildings continued to decrease (by 7.2% in the third quarter, with a negative impact of 0.2 p.p. on GDP growth).

Investment in equipment and machinery was also lower than in the same period last year, by 3.1% in total. Investment in transport equipment decreased by 11.3%, and in other equipment and machinery by 0.3%.

Exports down, imports up

Exports went down by 1.1% in the third quarter. Exports of goods decreased by 1.7%, while exports of services grew by 0.1%.

Imports were higher by 0.7%. Imports of goods went up by 0.8% and imports of services down by 0.5%.

Value added higher

Value added of Slovenian economy increased by 2.0% in the third quarter of 2025. Most activities contributed to the growth of total value added, most significantly construction (14.2% growth contributing 0.8 p.p. to GDP growth). Professional, scientific, technical, administrative and support services grew by 4.2%, contributing 0.4 p.p. to GDP growth. Similarly to the previous quarters of this year, value added decreased in the group of activities of mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity and water supply, waste management. The decrease amounted to 1.0% with a negative impact on GDP growth by 0.2 p.p.

In all remaining groups of activities, value added increased, including those that had recorded a decrease in the 2nd quarter (i.e. manufacturing, and financial and insurance activities).

Employment continues to fall

Total employment amounted to 1,103,000 persons in the 3rd quarter, which was 4,900 persons fewer or 0.4% lower than in the same period last year. This was the third consecutive quarterly drop in employment. As regards the number of persons, the decrease was the largest in manufacturing (by 3,700 persons or 1.7%, which was the 8th consecutive decline) and in construction (by 2,000 persons or 2.3%; this section of activities has recorded a decline in employment since the second half of 2024), while the increase was the largest in the group of activities public administration, education, human health and social work (up by 4,100 persons or 1.9%). 

By institutional sectors, employment went down in non-financial corporations (by 7,700 persons or 1.2%) and in financial corporations (by 100 persons or 0.7%). On the other hand, it increased in general government (by 2,600 persons or 1.4%) and in the household sector together with the NPISHs (by 200 persons or 0.1%).

Revision of the first and second quarter of 2025

Due to a revision in one of the major data sources, data on imports of goods and changes in inventories for the 1st and 2nd quarter have been revised more than usual. The revision does not have a significant impact on the GDP published in September.
