Foreign tourists staying in hotels spent more than half of their expenditures on accommodation
Foreign tourist staying in hotels spent on average EUR 214 per day. More than half of this amount was spent on accommodation. Four out of five foreign tourists staying in hotels came to Slovenia for private reasons. Among them 44% had already spent holidays in Slovenia.
Most foreign tourists came for private reasons, one in eight for business reasons
In April and May 2025, more than 456,000 foreign tourist arrivals were registered in hotels, which is over a half (53%) of all foreign tourist arrivals in accommodation establishments. 80% of those foreign tourists visited Slovenia for private reasons, 12% for business reasons (among them 44% visited Ljubljana), and 8% were in Slovenia only in transit or stated other reasons.
For most foreign tourists who visited Slovenia for private reasons, the main reason was holidays (56%), while 17% of them came for sightseeing.
A quarter of foreign tourists who came for private reasons had already visited the place of interview
Among foreign tourists who came to Slovenia for private reasons, more than half (56%) visited our country for the first time and three quarters visited for the first time the place of the interview. The share of foreign tourists who had already visited the place of the interview was the highest in seaside municipalities (42%), and the lowest in Ljubljana (15%).
The largest share of foreign tourists came together with their partner or spouse, or alone
More than a third of foreign tourists visited Slovenia with their partner or spouse and 18% came alone. The share of tourists travelling alone was the highest among tourists from non-European countries (32%). 17% came to Slovenia with friends and 14% with family with children (the share of those was the highest among foreign tourists in seaside municipalities, 32%).
Most foreign tourists booked their hotel accommodation themselves
In most cases (71%) foreign tourists booked their accommodation themselves: 37% via one of the online booking systems, and 34% directly with the accommodation establishment. 16% made reservations through a travel agency, while for 13% the reservation was made by others (school, employer, club, union, etc.). Only 1% of foreign tourists came to Slovenia without any advance booking.
Average expenditure EUR 214 per day
Foreign tourists staying in hotels spent on average EUR 214 per day for accommodation in Slovenia, for food and drink, transport within Slovenia, leisure and other activities, and purchases. In Ljubljana, they spent on average slightly more (EUR 253). Foreign tourists staying in hotels in seaside and health municipalities spent the least (EUR 132 and EUR 140 per day, respectively).
Expenses on accommodation represented more than half of all expenditures
The highest share (57% or EUR 122 per person per day) in the structure of expenditures was represented by expenses on accommodation (including expense for food, if it is part of the accommodation, i.e. half board). In addition to expenses on accommodation, foreign tourists staying in hotels spent on average EUR 92 per day on all other expenditures (on food and drink, purchases, transport within Slovenia, gambling, leisure and other activities). On average the lowest expenditures for other expenses (without accommodation) had foreign tourists in health municipalities (EUR 37), while in Ljubljana they spent almost three times as much (EUR 107).
For three quarters of foreign tourists the expenditures were within expectations, for 18% higher than they expected, while the rest thought that they were lower than they expected. The shares of foreign tourists for whom in their opinion the expenditures were higher than expected were the highest in urban and other municipalities (25%) and in seaside municipalities (21%).
