More food waste generated mainly in food production

Last year, 168,318 tonnes of food waste was generated, which means on average 79 kilograms per resident. The total amount was 2% higher than the year before. Most of the increase can be attributed to the higher amount of food waste in the food production. This increased by almost a fifth over the previous year due to the discarded larger quantities of substances unsuitable for consumption or processing. Slightly more food waste was also generated in households (by 2%) and food stores (by 1%). Less food was discarded only in food services (by 4%).

According to SURS’s estimate, in 2024 the edible part of food waste decreased by 1 percentage point and represented 60,600 tonnes or 36%, while the remaining 107,700 tonnes or 64% was the inedible part, which consists of peels, bones, pits, eggshells and similar substances that are never suitable for human consumption.

In the previous year, too, the largest share (44% or 73,600 tonnes) of food waste was generated in households. Thus, a resident discarded on average 35 kg of food at home, of which the edible part represented a third or 11 kg. 32% of all food waste was thrown away in food service, 15% in food production, and the least (9%) in food stores.

In total, four fifths of food waste treated in biogas and composting plants

The largest share of food waste was treated anaerobically in biogas plants (45%), followed by aerobic treatment in composting plants (34%). 19% of food waste was biologically stabilised before being disposed in plants for the mechanical and biological treatment (MBT) of municipal waste, and the remaining 2% was processed with other methods, such as incineration, oil refining and other biological recovery processes.
