Exploitation of water in industry, 2024

Less water used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants

Despite a hydrologically favourable year, less water was used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants than in 2023, when the amount of water used for this purpose was significantly above average. Mechanical-chemical wastewater treatment was the dominant method.

Industrial activities used less water

Industrial activities used slightly less than 101,008 million m3 of water or 6% less than in the previous year. The reason for the decrease was less water used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants. The amount of this water was 100,215 million m3, of which in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply 100,138 million m3 and in manufacturing 77 million m3

The amount of water used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants was the third largest in the last ten years. During this period, the amount was the largest in 2023, and the second largest in 2020. The least of this water was used in 2022.

More water than the year before was used only in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities, by 6%. In manufacturing, water use declined by 9%, in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 6% and in mining and quarrying by 2%.

Most of the water used for production

Industry used 100,238 million m3 for production, 767 million m3 for cooling processes, 0.7 million m3 for heating and 2.5 million m3 for sanitation and other purposes (vehicle washing, watering the greens, yard cleaning, etc.).

More discharged wastewater

Last year, industrial activities discharged 781 million m3 of wastewater, which was 3% more than in the previous year. The large majority of wastewater, 761 million m3 or 97%, was discharged with a higher temperature than it had before use. 14 million m3 of this water was treated before discharge and 747 million m3 untreated. In total, more than 23 million m3 of wastewater was treated, which is 2% more.

Mechanical-chemical wastewater treatment was the dominant method

In industrial activities, 23.4 million m3 of wastewater was treated. The mechanical-chemical method was used to treat 32.9% of all treated wastewater. This was followed by the mechanical-chemical-biological method with 29.3% and the mechanical method with 19.6%. The mechanical-biological method accounted for 11.2%. The remaining three methods accounted for 7.0%.
