Passenger-kilometres performed in national transport increased by a fifth

In 2024, about 15.2 million passengers were carried in national railway transport, 8% more than in the previous year. The number of passengers in international transport (including transit) was more than 1.5 million, or 9% lower. National railway transport represented 91% of total railway passenger transport in Slovenia, which increased by 6% over the previous year.

The total number of passenger-kilometres performed in national and international transport reached 1,090 million, of which 842 million (77%) in national transport, i.e. a 20% increase compared to 2023, while the total number of passenger-kilometres went up by a tenth.

Rail goods transport down

More than 18.4 million tonnes of goods were carried by train and 4,569 million tonne-kilometres were performed. Railway goods transport in tonnes decreased by 4% and in tonne-kilometres by 1% compared to the previous year. 88% of goods were carried in international transport, including transit.

Considering the type of goods, the largest share of goods carried by train (36% expressed in tonnes and 37% expressed in tonne-kilometres) were so-called other goods (unidentifiable goods in containers and a mixture of types of goods). They were followed by coal, gas, petrol and refined products (19% and 19%, respectively) and goods classified within mining and quarrying (16% and 16%, respectively).

Almost 2.2 million tonnes of dangerous goods were carried by train, which is 14% more than a year earlier. Flammable liquids represented the largest share, accounting for 96% of all dangerous goods carried.
