Slightly less urban wastewater generated

240.2 million m3 of wastewater from different sources was brought into the public sewage system last year in Slovenia: 6.7% from industry, 8.3% from agriculture and other activities and 29.9% from households. The remaining 55.1% was other wastewater, such as rainwater, run-off rainwater, seawater intrusion, etc.

Households generated 71.7 million m3 of urban wastewater, which is 10.6% less than a last year, while the total amount of wastewater discharged into the public sewage system decreased by 6.3%.

Two thirds of wastewater treated before discharge

176 million m3 of wastewater was treated before being discrged from the public sewage system into the environment. The largest quantity of wastewater was treated with tertiary treatment (90%), and the smallest (1%) with primary treatment.

The share of treated wastewater was the largest (98%) in the Pomurska statistical region and the Primorsko-notranjska statistical region, followed by Jugovzhodna Slovenija (96%) and Zasavska (95%). In all these regions the largest share of wastewater was treated with tertiary treatment, namely in Pomurska 90%, in Primorsko-notranjska 86%, in Jugovzhodna Slovenija 78% and in Zasavska 95%. The share of wastewater treated with secondary treatment was the largest in the Posavska statistical region (36%), followed by the Koroška statistical region (34%).

The remaining 64.2 million m3 or 27% of wastewater remained untreated. Almost 96.5% of untreated wastewater was discharged into surface water and the remaining 3.5% into ground water and on the coast. Treated wastewater was discharged in almost equal shares: 96% into surface water, about 2.3% into ground water and about 1.7% on the coast.

Less drainage wastewater (rainwater and run-off rainwater)

Rainwater and run-off rain water represented 55% of wastewater in 2024. Compared to the previous year, the quantity decreased by 9%. Almost 132.4 million m3 of wastewater ran off from roofs and hardened paved areas into the public sewage system.
