Tourist arrivals and overnight stays, May 2025

Fewer tourists from Germany, more from Italy and Croatia

Accommodation establishments reported just over 617,000 tourist arrivals and 1.4 million overnight stays in May, which was more than a year before. Among tourists with the most overnight stays, the largest year-on-year growth was recorded among those from Italy – by more than a half.

Domestic tourists generated 24% of all overnight stays in accommodation establishments. There were just over 130,000 arrivals (4% more than in May last year) and just over 349,000 overnight stays (5% more). They spent the largest number of their nights in Piran, where they generated 53,000 overnight stays (15% of all their overnight stays in May), which was 5% more than last May. The largest number of overnight stays among domestic tourists (24%) was generated by those aged 65+. The average length of their stay was 4.9 nights.

Foreign tourists generated just over 487,000 arrivals (4% more than in May last year) and just over 1 million overnight stays (2% more). They generated 76% of all tourist overnight stays and again spent the largest number of their nights in Ljubljana – almost a quarter or 6% more than last year. Municipalities Piran (11%) and Bled (10%) were their second and third most frequent choices. The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was also generated by those aged 65+ (19%).



Among foreign tourists those from Germany ranked first, but with 31% fewer overnight stays than last year

Similarly to May 2024, the largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated by tourists from Germany, almost 149,000 or 14% of all foreign overnight stays. The largest number of their overnight stays (15%) was generated in the capital of Slovenia – Ljubljana, where they spent on average 2.1 nights. Piran (12%) and Bovec (10%) were their second and third most frequent choices.

With just over 120,000 overnight stays (11% of all foreign overnight stays), guests from Austria ranked second. They spent the largest number of their nights in Piran (29%), followed by Ljubljana (11%) and Moravske Toplice (9%).

With almost 83,000 overnight stays (8% of all foreign overnight stays), guests from Italy ranked third. Ljubljana was the most visited (24%), followed by Piran (12%) and Nova Gorica (9%).

They were followed by tourists from Croatia, the United States of America and Hungary.

Compared to May 2024, the largest growth of overnight stays among the mentioned countries was recorded by tourists from Italy (by 53%) and Croatia (by 40%). On the other hand, a decrease by 31% was recorded by tourists from Germany.



In mountain resorts 88% of all overnight stays generated by foreign tourists

The largest number of tourist overnight stays in May was recorded in mountain resorts (27% of all overnight stays) – 88% of all were generated by foreign tourists. Seaside resorts and Ljubljana followed with 19% of all overnight stays each. Here, too, foreign tourists prevailed – they generated 62% of all overnight stays in seaside resorts and as many as 98% in the capital. There were 18% of all overnight stays in health (spa) resorts – 52% of all overnight stays there were generated by domestic tourists.

Compared to May 2024, the number of tourist overnight stays increased the most in Ljubljana (by 6%). The number also increased in health (spa) resorts (by 3%) and seaside resorts (by 1%). On the other hand, a 1% drop was recorded in mountain resorts.

Almost a tenth more overnight stays in hotels

Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (just over 701,000 or 49% of all), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (21%) and camping sites (12%).

Year-on-year, the number of overnight stays in hotels went up by 9%. It went down by 4% in private accommodations – rented rooms, dwellings and by 6% in camping sites.

In the first five months, 4% more tourist overnight stays

In the first five months of this year, tourists generated 2 million arrivals (5% more than in the same period last year) and almost 5 million overnight stays (4% more). Foreign tourists generated 68% of all overnight stays, the largest number tourists from Italy, followed by tourists from Croatia and Austria.

Domestic tourists generated almost 1.6 million overnight stays, about the same as in the same period last year, and foreign tourists almost 3.3 million, 5% more than last year. 

Interesting fact: During Labour Day, 1 and 2 May, guests from Italy prevailed among foreign tourists

According to the experimental statistics Daily tourism flow in Slovenia, during Labour Day (1 and 2 May) guests from Italy ranked first regarding the number of foreign arrivals, followed by tourists from Hungary and Austria. While Ljubljana was the first choice among guests from Italy (28%), Bled was number one for those from Hungary (22%) and Piran for those from Austria (24%).
