Migration changes in 2024 similar to the year before

Nearly 4,800 Slovenian citizens immigrated to Slovenia last year, as did 28,300 foreign citizens. About 5,100 Slovenian citizens and 16,400 foreign citizens emigrated from the country. Net migration was just over 11,500 persons.

Net migration positive

33,023 people immigrated to Slovenia and 21,491 emigrated from it in 2024. Compared to the previous year, the number of immigrants was 3% lower, and the number of emigrants 4% lower. Net migration remained almost the same; 11,532 more residents immigrated to the country than emigrated from it.

Net migration of Slovenian citizens was negative. Among them, 4,773 immigrated to Slovenia or 18% more than in 2023, and 5,098 emigrated from the country, or about 9% fewer than a year before.

Net migration of foreign citizens was positive for the twenty-sixth year in a row: 11,857 more foreigners immigrated to Slovenia than emigrated from it. Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina contributed the most to net migration: 3,900 more immigrated to Slovenia than emigrated from it.

The most common countries of previous residence for immigrants with Slovenian citizenship were Germany and Austria (23% and 17%, respectively), followed by Croatia, Switzerland, and Italy.

The largest number of foreign immigrants came from Bosnia and Herzegovina (36% of all foreign immigrants). Some other common countries of previous residence were Kosovo, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Ukraine.

A fifth (22%) of emigrants with Slovenian citizenship left for Austria. Some other common countries of next residence were Germany (17%), Croatia, and Switzerland.

Among foreign emigrants, the most common country of next residence was Bosnia and Herzegovina (36%), followed by Kosovo (18%) and Serbia (10%).

Data on socioeconomic characteristics of international migrants will be published on 17 December 2025.

Internal migrations

110,727 internal migrations (i.e. changes of residence within a country) were registered or almost the same as in the previous year.

The majority (81%) of residents who changed their settlement of residence moved to another municipality; 19% moved to another settlement within the same municipality. Most changes of residence were made by Slovenian citizens (87,000 changes), while foreign citizens recorded 24,000 changes of residence. The mean age of internal migrants was 35.9 years, and 46% of internal migrants were 20–39 years old.

About 5% of Slovenian population changed their settlement of residence at least once. Compared to citizens of Slovenia, foreign citizens are a more mobile population group: one in ten foreign citizens changed the settlement of residence at least once, while among Slovenian citizens one in twenty-five did so.

Another 43,322 changes of residence by 41,379 residents were recorded within settlements; statistically these are not counted as migrations. Within Ljubljana 14,224 residents changed their residence at least once, and within Maribor 4,875 residents did so.
