Half of enterprises still operating five years after birth
Half of the enterprise births in 2018 were still operating five years after they were established. In enterprise births operating after one year, the number of employed and self-employed persons increased by 18% and after operating five years by 68%.

Of enterprises born in 2022, 86.2% were still operating in 2023. Of enterprises born in 2020, 64.5% were operating after three years and of enterprises born in 2018, 50.3% were operating after five years. Most enterprises survived in real estate activities (64.0% of enterprise births were active after five years), followed by water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (61.5%).
Enterprise survivals employed more persons than in the year of birth. In enterprise births operating after one year, the number of employed and self-employed persons increased by 17.5% and after operating five years by 67.5% (from 11,040 to 18,494). After five years of operation, the number of employees and self-employed persons was the largest in construction, where it increased above average (by 129.9%), followed by professional, scientific and technical activities, where the increase was below average (by 34.4%).

Enterprise births account for almost 11% of all enterprises
In 2023, 21,133 enterprise births were recorded. Among all enterprises operating in 2023, 10.5% were enterprise births. In terms of activity, the share of enterprise births was the largest in administrative and support service activities (15.7%), followed by education (14.6%) and arts, entertainment and recreation (14.4%).
Similar to previous years, the largest number of enterprise births was recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities (20.4% of enterprise births). More detailed data on this section show that the largest number of enterprise births was recorded in activities of head offices; management consultancy activities (47.5%), followed by other professional, scientific and technical activities (17.0%).
Enterprise births employed 22,312 employed and self-employed persons, which is 2.8% of employed and self-employed persons in all enterprises. The average size of enterprise births was one person employed. It was the largest in manufacturing and the smallest in real estate activities.

Most enterprise deaths in professional, scientific and technical activities
According to provisional data, 13,333 enterprise deaths were recorded in 2023. They employed 13,806 persons. On average, one job was lost per enterprise death. As in the previous year, the largest number of these enterprises was recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities (20.2%), followed by accommodation and food service activities (16.6%) and wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (9.3%).

Data on enterprise deaths for 2023 are provisional. Final data are expected to be published in June 2026.
With the observation year 2023, the procedure for excluding events such as mergers, continuation of a family business, etc. from the population of enterprise births was updated, which is mainly reflected in natural persons and persons without employees in certain sections of activity (accommodation and food service activities (I), education (P) and arts, entertainment and recreation (R)). The data for the mentioned populations are therefore not comparable with the data for previous years.
