Slovenia was the country of control of half of enterprise groups

In 2023, economic activity in Slovenia was generated by 6,148 enterprise groups, of which more than a third were all-resident. Combined with domestically controlled multinational enterprise groups, Slovenia was the country of control of roughly half of enterprise groups.

The remaining half of enterprise groups were foreign controlled, of which a little less than a half (44%) were controlled by four EU Member States (Austria, Croatia, Germany and Italy).

The share of all-resident enterprise groups was the highest in professional, scientific and technical activities (22%), and of domestically controlled multinational enterprise groups (23%) and foreign controlled multinational enterprise groups (29%) in retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Enterprise groups with five or fewer units in the group prevail in all-resident groups and in foreign controlled enterprise groups

About 90% of enterprises integrated into all-resident enterprise groups belong to the size class of five or fewer units in the group. The share is similar with foreign controlled enterprise groups (91%). As regards domestically controlled enterprise groups, the situation is different, as 69% of enterprises belong to the size class of five or fewer units in the group, while the remaining belong to the size class of six or more units in the group.

Enterprises integrated into all-resident enterprise groups belonging to the size class of five or fewer units in the group generated 84% of total turnover of this type of enterprise groups, while the share with foreign controlled enterprise groups is slightly lower at 78%. As regards domestically controlled enterprise groups, the opposite is true as the share of the size class of five or fewer units in the group is 34%.

The situation with employment is similar to generated turnover. Enterprises integrated into all-resident groups with the size class of five or fewer units in the group employed 82% of all employees and self-employed persons in this type of enterprise groups, while the share in foreign controlled enterprise groups is slightly lower at 81%. Domestically controlled enterprise groups with the size class of five or fewer units in the group employed more than half of employees and self-employed persons in this type of groups.

Enterprises integrated into multinational enterprise groups generated more turnover than enterprises integrated into all-resident groups

In 2023, 9,299 enterprises were integrated into enterprise groups, which is only 4% of all enterprises. However, these enterprises employed more than a third of all employees and self-employed persons in Slovenia and generated nearly two thirds of total turnover.

Enterprises integrated into multinational enterprise groups lead the way as they employed more than a quarter of all employees and self-employed persons in Slovenia and generated more than a half of total turnover. Foreign controlled multinational enterprise groups are slightly more important than domestically controlled ones regarding employment as well as turnover as they employed 6 percentage points more (17%) employees and self-employed persons and generated 5 percentage points (29%) more turnover.
