Labour costs up in almost all sections of activities, the most in human health and social work activities

In the 1st quarter of 2025, the labour costs per hour worked increased on average by 12.3% over the same quarter a year before (in the previous quarter they went up by 6.8% year-on-year). In the same period, earnings per hour worked increased by 12.4% and other labour costs per hour worked by 12.2%. The increase is the result of higher labour costs and fewer hours worked.

The labour costs per hour worked decreased only in agriculture, forestry and fishing (by 3.9%), and went up in all other sections of activities. They increased the most in human health and social work activities (by 19.3%), followed by public administration and defence, compulsory social security (by 15.3%) and education (by 13.8%), which is largely due to the introduction of a reformed public sector wage system.

According to Eurostat data, compared to the same quarter of the previous year, in the 4th quarter of 2024 the labour costs per hour worked (agriculture, forestry and fishing excluded) were higher in all EU Member States.
