25 May – the day with the largest number of marriages in 2024

In 2024, there were fewer marriages and divorces in Slovenia than the year before as 6,353 couples married and 2,064 divorced. On average, seventeen couples were married per day and six couples were divorced.

Slightly fewer marriages than in the previous year

In 2024, 6,353 couples were married or 35 (0.5%) fewer than a year ago. Among marriages, there were 60 same-sex marriages: 28 between two men and 32 between two women.

The marriage rate was 3.0 per 1,000 population. It was the highest in the Pomurska and Koroška statistical regions (3.2) and the lowest in the Primorsko-notranjska statistical region (2.0).

The happiest day for couples getting married in 2024 was 25 May. On that day, 205 couples were married. On average. last year 17 couples were married per day. The month with the largest number of marriages was June (995) and the month with the smallest number January (198). Most couples were married on a Saturday, 3,751 or 59%.

Grooms on average almost three years older than brides


The mean age of a groom at marriage was 37.3 years. On average grooms were almost three years older than brides (34.7 years).

5,687 (90%) grooms and 5,691 (90%) brides were married for the first time. For 5,310 (84%) couples this was the first marriage for both spouses. 

The mean age of a groom at first marriage was 32.8 years. A bride was on average almost two years younger (31.0 years).

Most marriages take place between Slovenian citizens. In 4,999 marriages (79%) both the groom and the bride had Slovenian citizenship. 510 grooms (8%) with Slovenian citizenship married brides with foreign citizenship. Among those, the largest number of brides was from Bosnia and Herzegovina. 545 brides (9%) with Slovenian citizenship married grooms with foreign citizenship. The largest number of grooms was also from Bosnia and Herzegovina. 299 marriages (5%) were between two residents with foreign citizenship.

Fewer divorces than the year before

In 2024, 2,064 couples were divorced, 101 (5%) fewer than the year before. Six couples on average were divorced per day. One couple per 1,000 population divorced in Slovenia last year.

The mean age of husband at divorce was 47.5 years and of wife 44.7 years. Average duration of marriage at divorce was 14 years. 38 marriages ended in divorce in the first year of marriage.

In half of the divorces, there were no minor dependent children. In the remaining divorces, there were 1,709 minor dependent children. Half of the children were assigned to mothers, 2% to fathers, and 48% to both parents.
