Highest number of self-employed so far, 1 in 9 persons in employment

The number of persons in employment increased by about 2,300 over the previous month. Their number grew the most in construction, by 0.7%. The number of self-employed persons increased to the highest level since we started observing register-based data on persons in employment.

The highest number of self-employed so far

In March, the number of persons in employment increased to about 940,800, which is nearly 2,300 or 0.2% more than the previous month. There were 837,000 employed individuals, and nearly 103,800 self-employed persons. The number of persons in paid employment rose by about 1,900 or 0.2%, while the number of self-employed increased by just under 400 or 0.4%. This is the largest number of self-employed persons since we started observing register-based data, and they now represent 11.0% of persons in employment.

Compared to March last year, the number of persons in employment decreased by 0.4%. The number of persons in paid employment fell by 0.6%, while the number of self-employed grew by 1.8%.

More men and women in employment

From a gender perspective, on a monthly basis the number increased for both men and women in employment – men by just under 1,500 or 0.3% to about 518,500, and women by about 800 or 0.2% to just over 422,200.

In a year-on-year comparison, the number of men in employment decreased by 0.7%, while the number of women remained the same.

Growth in most sections of activities, highest in construction

On a monthly basis, the number of persons in employment increased in 15 sections. The largest growth was recorded in construction, by just under 600 or 0.7%. In four sections of activities, the number of persons in employment decreased, with the largest decline in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, about 40 persons. The number of persons in employment in agriculture, forestry, and fishing remained unchanged.

On a year-on-year basis, the number of persons in employment decreased both in construction (by 1.9%) and in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles trade (by 0.9%).

More Slovenian and foreign nationals in employment

The number of Slovenian nationals in employment (excluding farmers) increased on a monthly basis by around 1,300 or 0.2% to about 775,500 persons. The number of foreign nationals in employment increased by about 1,000 or 0.7% to about 147,000 persons. Foreign nationals represented 15.9% of persons in employment (excluding farmers) and came from 154 different countries. Nearly half of them were from Bosnia and Herzegovina (just over 71,000), followed by citizens of Serbia (about 16,700), Kosovo (just under 15,400), Croatia (a little over 10,600), and North Macedonia (about 9,800).

Compared to last March, the number of foreign nationals in employment went up by 2.0%, and the number of Slovenian nationals in employment down by 0.7%.
