Livestock production, 2024
Meat production up for poultry, but down for bovine and pig meat
On agricultural holdings bovine and pig meat production decreased, while poultry meat production increased over the previous year. Also total meat production decreased slightly compared to 2023. In addition, the production of eggs decreased, while the production of cows’ milk increased.
Meat production down, milk production up
In 2024, livestock producers in Slovenia produced around 43,000 tonnes of bovine meat, 22,800 tonnes of pig meat, 78,400 tonnes of poultry meat, and around 1,700 tonnes of sheep and goat meat combined. Over the past 15 years, poultry meat production has seen the largest growth, increasing by more than a quarter. In the same period, bovine meat production remained relatively stable, while pig meat production was halved.
Total indigenous meat production was around 3% lower than 15 years ago. Cows’ milk production reached around 591 million litres, and laying hens produced around 396 million eggs.
Bovine meat production lower
Gross indigenous production of bovine meat on agricultural holdings decreased from about 44,300 tonnes in 2023 to around 43,000 tonnes in 2024, i.e. by nearly 3%. The amount of bovine meat from slaughterhouses was around 32,100 tonnes, more than 4% lower than in the previous year. The number of slaughtered bovine animals was also down, at around 106,000, or more than 6% fewer than in 2023.
On the other hand, the number of imported cattle increased by more than 6%, with around 36,500 animals imported, mostly calves. Exports also rose slightly (by almost 4%), with around 51,300 cattle exported, primarily adult animals (heifers, bulls, and cows).
Pig meat production also lower
Gross indigenous production of pig meat on agricultural holdings dropped from around 23,600 tonnes in 2023 to about 22,800 tonnes in 2024, a decrease of more than 3%. Around 204,000 pigs were slaughtered in slaughterhouses, yielding about 18,500 tonnes of pig meat, which was more than 1% less than in the previous year. In addition, more than 36,000 pigs were slaughtered on farms, resulting in approximately 4,400 tonnes of pig meat.
According to provisional external trade data, about 65,000 pigs were imported (mainly piglets) and around 25,000 pigs were exported (mainly fattening pigs). Imports were only slightly larger than the year before, while exports increased by more than 23%.
Poultry meat production up, egg production down
Gross indigenous production of poultry meat on agricultural holdings increased from about 76,600 tonnes in 2023 to about 78,400 tonnes in 2024, i.e. by more than 2%. In contrast, laying hens produced about 396 million eggs, over 8% fewer than in the previous year. Of these, more than 328 million were eggs for human consumption.
Almost three quarters of eggs for human consumption were produced on holdings with larger flocks (more than 5,000 laying hens), while around one fifth were produced on holdings with fewer than 350 hens.
Sheep and goat meat production without major changes
Gross indigenous production of sheep meat was estimated at around 1,400 tonnes and of goat meat at around 340 tonnes. These quantities are similar to those of previous years.
Milk production higher than a year earlier
In 2024, about 591 million litres of cows’ milk were produced on agricultural holdings, which is around 3.5 million litres or slightly less than 1% more than in 2023. Milk production from small ruminants remained mostly unchanged: goats' milk production was around 1.6 million litres and ewes’ milk production about 0.7 million litres.
Honey production returned to average levels
After a very poor yield in 2023, honey production increased significantly in 2024 and reached 1,094 tonnes, which is comparable to the average production over the past ten years.
