Almost a third more juveniles convicted
In 2024, the number of educational measures and sentences imposed on juveniles was 28.2% higher than the year before, while the number of sentenced adults was almost 3% lower. Court proceedings were on average shorter by 5.9% than in 2023 for natural persons, and longer by 29.3% for legal persons.
Slightly more criminal complaints filed against adults, fewer charged
Last year, 25,694 criminal complaints were filed against adults, 2,422 against juveniles and 795 against legal persons. Compared to 2023, that number rose by 2.2% for adults and by 7.5% for juveniles, and decreased by 5.4% for legal persons.
The number of criminal charges against adults was 10.2% lower than the year before. In the structure of charged adults, however, the number of convictions rose by 4.9 percentage points over the previous year.
Larceny the most common criminal offence of convicted adults
In 2024, there were 4,924 adult convictions; 85.5% of convicted adults were men and 14.5% women. The number of convicted adults fell by 2.9% compared to the year before.
Amongst those convicted, the largest number committed criminal offences against property, most commonly larceny and grand larceny. Criminal offences against property represented 33.0% of all convictions for men, and 53.5% of all convictions for women.

Convicted adults most frequently imposed shorter suspended prison sentences
A prison sentence was imposed on 89.7% of convicted adult men, of which 63.4% were suspended prison sentences. 91.3% of convicted adult women received a prison sentence, of which 82.5% were suspended. The most common prison sentence for both men and women was a suspended prison sentence of over 3 and up to 6 months.
More juveniles imposed an educational measure or sentence than the year before
The courts sentenced 241 juveniles in 2024, a 28.2% increase over 2023. The most common educational measure was supervision by a social assistance institution, under which juveniles remain in their home environment and are supervised by assigned counsellors who provide professional support in their upbringing and development.
Juveniles were also most commonly sentenced for criminal offences against property (39.4%), a 3.3 percentage point increase compared to 2023 (36.1%).

Court proceedings mostly shorter than the year before
The average length of criminal court proceedings for adult offenders (calculated from the date of the official complaint to the date of final court decision) was 362 days, or 22 fewer than the year before.
In 2024, the shortest proceedings, on average, were held for criminal offences against the safety of public transport (199 days), and the longest, on average, for criminal offences against employment and social security (798 days). The most common sentence for the former was a fine, and for the latter a suspended prison sentence of over 3 and up to 6 months.
Court proceedings for criminal offences against sexual inviolability lasted on average 600 days, 54 fewer than in 2023. Adults convicted of such offences most commonly received a suspended prison sentence of over 6 months and up to 1 year or an unsuspended prison sentence of over 2 and up to 10 years.
The average length of court proceedings for juvenile offenders (calculated from date of motion for the imposition of a criminal sanction to the date of final court decision) was 193 days, or 6 fewer than the average in 2023.
The proceedings were on average shortest for juveniles who committed criminal offences against economy (91 days), and the longest for criminal offences against the safety of public transport (232 days). The most frequent educational measure imposed on juveniles for both types of offences was supervision by a social assistance institution. The longest court proceedings, on average, were held in cases in which the juvenile was committed to a correction institution (423 days).
In 2024, 24 legal persons were also convicted by courts. Their proceedings were on average concluded after 517 days from the date of indictment. The length of proceedings averaged 132 days more than the average in 2023, when 22 legal persons were convicted by courts.
