Value of external trade in goods higher in March as well as the first quarter
In March, the values of exports and imports from non-member countries grew the most, due to a large increase in the value of operations involving processing. In the 1st quarter, the most important product group was chemicals and related products, and the key trading partner was Switzerland.

The third surplus in external trade in goods of this year recorded in March
While the value of imports in March was the highest of this year, the value of exports was lower than in February but higher than in January. The export-import ratio in March was 113.4%. Slovenia generated a surplus of EUR 0.9 billion in external trade in goods.
Value of external trade in goods also up in the 1st quarter
In the 1st quarter, the value of exports amounted to EUR 21.5 billion, which was 48.4% higher than in the same period a year ago, while the value of imports went up by 15.2% to EUR 18.3 billion.
The export-import ratio was 117.4%; a trade surplus of EUR 3.2 billion was generated. This was the first quarter with a positive trade balance after 15 consecutive quarters with a negative trade balance, since a surplus was last recorded in the 1st quarter of 2021.
Most important main group of products was chemicals
In the 1st quarter, the most important product group (according to the Standard International Trade Classification – SITC) was chemicals and related products – Slovenia exported EUR 13.2 billion and imported EUR 9.6 billion worth of them.
By values of trade, the groups machinery and transport equipment and manufactured goods classified chiefly by material followed. Exports of machinery and transport equipment amounted to EUR 3.6 billion and imports to EUR 3.2 billion. Manufactured goods classified chiefly by material were exported in the value of EUR 2.0 billion, while its imports amounted to EUR 1.8 billion.
Key trading partner in the 1st quarter was Switzerland
As regards external trade values in goods in the 1st quarter, Slovenia’s most important export markets were Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Croatia and Austria, while key import markets were Switzerland, China, Germany, India and Italy.

- The value of exports to EU Member States went up by 0.4% and to EU non-member countries up by 107.3%; without operations involving processing1, exports to the latter increased by 3.8% to EUR 924 million.
Imports (EUR 6.7 billion):
- Value up by 30.6%.
- The value of imports from EU Member States went up by 3.2% and from EU non-member countries by 63.2%; without operations involving processing1, imports from the latter decreased by 5.6% to EUR 766 million.
