Consumer price indices, February 2025
Annual growth of consumer prices at 1.6%, monthly at 0.3%
The largest influence on annual inflation came from 2.8% higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. At the monthly level, the largest influence came from 10.9% higher prices of package holidays.
At the annual level prices on average 1.6% higher
In February, consumer prices increased by 1.6% at the annual level. In the same month last year inflation stood at 3.4%.
In one year, service prices increased on average by 3.2% and goods prices by 0.7%. Semi-durable goods prices went up by 1.3% and non-durable goods prices by 0.9%, while durable goods were 0.4% cheaper.
The annual inflation rate was pushed up the most (by 0.5 of a percentage point) by 2.8% higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. Higher prices in the group transport (by 2.7%) contributed 0.4 p.p. and higher prices in the group restaurants and hotels (by 4.6%) added 0.3 p.p. to inflation.
On the other hand, prices in the group housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels decreased by 4.6%, which eased the inflation by 0.6 p.p.
Package holidays more expensive in February
At the monthly level, the largest impact (by 0.4 p.p.) on inflation came from 10.9% higher prices of package holidays. Inflation was raised by 0.1 p.p. each by higher prices of clothing (by 2.8%), water supply and miscellaneous services relating to the dwelling (by 2.2%) and food (0.4%). Monthly inflation was raised by 0.1 p.p. also by more expensive operation of personal transport equipment (by 1.3), where the highest price increases were observed for diesel (by 2.1%), petrol (by 1.8%) and driving lessons, tests, licences and road worthiness tests (by 1.8%). All other price increases combined added another 0.1 p.p.
Prices in the group electricity, gas and town gas decreased by 9.7% on average, which lowered the monthly inflation by 0.6 p.p. The decreasing impact stemmed entirely from one subgroup, i.e. 20.1% cheaper electricity.
Harmonised indices of consumer prices
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this February the annual growth of consumer prices was 1.9% (a year ago 3.4%). The monthly price growth stood at 0.2%.
In one year, service prices went up on average by 3.9% and goods prices by 0.8%. Non-durable goods prices went up by 1.3% and semi-durable goods prices by 0.6%, while durable goods prices went down by 1.3%.
Annual inflation rates in January 2025 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in January the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.5% (a month before 2.4%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.8% (a month before 2.7%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Denmark (1.4%) and the highest in Hungary (5.7%); in Slovenia it stood at 2.3%.
