Tourist arrivals and overnight stays, January 2025
In January, the largest number of tourists from two neighbouring countries – Croatia and Italy
In the first month of this year, accommodation establishments reported 294,000 tourist arrivals and almost 785,000 overnight stays, both more than a year ago. Tourists spent the largest number of nights in municipalities Ljubljana, Kranjska Gora, Piran and Brežice.
5% more tourist overnight stays than in the same period the year before
In January, tourists generated 9% more arrivals and 5% more overnight stays than in the same month the year before.
Domestic tourists generated 35% of all overnight stays in accommodation establishments. There were almost 95,000 arrivals (1% more than in January 2024) and just over 275,000 overnight stays (1% fewer). They spent the largest number of their nights in Kranjska Gora, Piran and Zreče. 27% of all their overnights in January was generated in these three municipalities. The largest number of overnight stays among domestic tourists, 19%, was generated by those in the age group 7–14 years (post-Christmas holidays). The average length of their stay was 3.1 nights.
Foreign tourists generated just over 199,000 arrivals (13% more than in January 2024) and just over 509,000 overnight stays (8% more). They generated 65% of all tourist overnight stays and spent the largest number of their nights in Ljubljana, followed by Kranjska Gora and Maribor; 6% of all foreign overnight stays in January were generated in the latter, the largest number by tourists from Croatia.
The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated in the age group 35–44 years (20% of all their overnight stays). The average length of stay for this group was 2.4 nights.

Structure of foreign tourists with the largest share of overnight stays the same as a year ago
Similar to January 2024, the largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated by tourists from Croatia, just over 121,000 or 24% of all foreign overnight stays. The most represented age group was 35–44-year-olds, and the largest number of their overnight stays (21%) was generated in municipality Kranjska Gora. Ljubljana and Brežice were their second and third most frequent choices.
With just over 90,000 overnight stays (18% of all foreign overnight stays), guests from Italy ranked second. They spent the largest number of their nights in the capital – Ljubljana, followed by Piran and Nova Gorica. The most numerous age group was 45–54-year-olds.
They were followed by tourists from Serbia, Austria and Hungary.
Compared to January 2024, the number of overnight stays among the mentioned foreign markets increased the most for tourists from Serbia (by 13%). On the other hand, it decreased only for tourists from Hungary (by 2%).

1 percentage point more overnight stays in health (spa) resorts than in mountain resorts
In health (spa) resorts, 31% of tourist overnight stays were recorded, the most popular being municipality Brežice. With 30% of all tourist overnight stays they were followed by mountain resorts (municipality Kranjska Gora being the most popular). Municipality Ljubljana ranked third (16%). In seaside resorts, 8% of all tourist overnights were generated.
Domestic tourists generated the largest share of overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (45% of their overnight stays), with Zreče, Podčetrtek and Moravske Toplice being the most popular municipalities.
Foreign tourists most often opted for mountain resorts (30% of their overnight stays), with Kranjska Gora as their first choice, followed by Bled and Bohinj.
Compared to January 2024, the number of tourist overnight stays went up in all types of municipalities, the most in the capital – Ljubljana (by 14%).
Among types of accommodations, tourists still most often stay in hotels
Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (just over 451,000 or 57% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (21%) and apartment settlements (5%).
The number of overnight stays in hotels went up by 6% and in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings by 2%.
Interesting fact: on New Year’s Day the largest number of domestic arrivals recorded in Piran
According to the experimental statistics Daily tourism flow in Slovenia, on 1 January the largest number of domestic arrivals was recorded in accommodation establishments in Piran (15% of all their arrivals on that day). Two mountain municipalities – Kranjska Gora and Bohinj – ranked second and third. The largest number of foreign arrivals on that day was recorded in accommodation establishments in the capital of Slovenia – Ljubljana (34% of all their arrivals on that day).
