The value of external trade in goods in December and in 2024 up

In 2024, exports and imports increased over the previous year. The values of trade with EU Member States and EU non-member countries both went up. Chemicals and related products were the most important group of products.

Key statistics for 2024

Exports (EUR 61.5 billion):
  • Value up by 11.8% compared to the previous year.
  • Growth in trade with EU Member States by 1.1% and EU non-member countries – up by 25.1%, without operations involving processing1, up by 3.6% to EUR 10.3 billion.
Imports (EUR 69.1 billion):
  • Value up by 21.1% compared to the previous year.
  • From EU Member States up by 0.8% and in trade with EU non-member countries up by 47.0%; without operations involving processing1, imports from the latter up by 1.1% to EUR 9.2 billion.

Key statistics for December 2024

Exports (EUR 4.6 billion):
  • Value up by 17.7% compared to December 2023.
  • The value of exports to EU Member States down by 1.1% and to EU non-member countries up by 40.7%; without operations involving processing1, exports to the latter up by 7.8% to EUR 839 million.
Imports (EUR 5.5 billion):
  • Value up by 39.7% compared to December 2023.
  • The value of imports from EU Member States down by 2.4% and from EU non-member countries significantly up by 111.1%; without operations involving processing1, imports from the latter up by 11.8% to EUR 706 million.

For the fifth month in a row, a monthly trade deficit was recorded in external trade in goods. It amounted EUR 0.9 billion, while the export-import ratio was 84.0%. 

The average monthly values of exports and imports increased compared to averages in 2023, of exports by 1.4% and of imports by 16.2%.

In all four quarters trade up

During all four quarters, external trade increased compared to the same period of 2023. The highest growth of exports (19.6%) was recorded in the 3rd quarter and of imports (42.8%) in the 4th quarter. 

The value of trade with EU Member States and EU non-member countries up last year

In 2024, Slovenia exported EUR 30.9 billion of goods to EU Member states or 1.1% more than in the previous year and imported from this group of countries EUR 32.3 billion or 0.8% more.

The value of exports to EU non-member countries with EUR 30.5 billion was up by 25.1% compared to 2023 and the value of imports from this group of countries with EUR 36.8 billion up by 47.0%.

Highest growth in exports to Switzerland and imports from India

In 2024, Slovenia’s most important export markets were Switzerland, Germany, Croatia, Italy, and Austria. In the same period, Slovenia imported the most in terms of value from Switzerland, Germany, China, India and Italy. Compared to the same period of last year, exports to Switzerland and imports from India grew the most.

Chemicals and related products most important group of products in 2024

The most important group of products (according to the Standard International Trade Classification – SITC) was chemicals and related products. Their value was 45.6% of total value of exports and 49.5% of total value of imports. The value of chemicals and related products doubled compared to a year earlier.

They were followed by products from the groups machinery and transport equipment (24.3% of exports and 19.3% of imports), manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (12.7% of exports and 10.3% of imports), miscellaneous manufactured articles (6.8% of exports and 5.8% of imports) and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (4.7% of exports and 6.9% of imports).
