Consumer sentiment slightly down at the beginning of the year

In January, the consumer confidence indicator deteriorated by 1 percentage point at both the monthly and the annual level.

At the monthly level slightly down

The value of the consumer confidence indicator decreased by 1 percentage points (p.p.) compared to December, and was 4 p.p. below the long-term average.

The monthly decrease in the confidence indicator resulted mainly from more pessimistic consumer opinions on current households’ finances (lower by 7 p.p.). Expectations about households’ finances also deteriorated (by 3 p.p.), while expectations about the country’s economy and about major purchases improved (by 3 and 1 p.p., respectively).

Slightly lower also at the annual level

The consumer confidence indicator deteriorated by 1 p.p. compared to last year’s January.

At the annual level, opinions on current households’ finances and expectations for major purchases deteriorated (both by 2 p.p.). Expectations about households’ finances slightly improved (by 1 p.p.), while expectations about the country’s economy remained at the same level.

Consumers’ expectations about home improvements and home purchase also down

Compared to October 2024, consumers’ expectations about home improvements and about home purchase deteriorated (by 2 and 1 p.p., respectively). Expectations about car purchase remained at the same level.

The data are based on the Consumer Survey, which was answered by 956 persons between 1 and 19 January 2025.
