Consumer price indices, December 2024

Annual growth of consumer prices at 1.9%, average annual inflation at 2.0%

The year ends with a 1.9% inflation. The largest impact on the annual inflation came from higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. In one year, service prices went up by 2.7% and goods prices by 1.4%. At the monthly level, consumer prices went down by 0.3%.

Annual inflation in December at 1.9%

This year, consumer prices rose by 1.9% annually (in the same month last year by 4.2%), while the average annual price growth was 2.0%.

In one year, service prices increased on average by 2.7% and goods prices by 1.4%. Semi-durable goods prices went up by 2.0% and non-durable goods prices by 1.9%, while durable goods were 0.8% cheaper. 

The annual growth rate was pushed up the most (by 0.5 of a percentage point) by 2.6% higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. Higher prices in the group restaurants and hotels (by 4.1%) added 0.3 p.p.

0.2 p.p. each was contributed by higher prices in the groups alcoholic beverages and tobacco (by 3.6%), clothing and footwear (by 2.2%), miscellaneous goods and services (also by 2.2%), housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (by 1.3%) and transport (by 1.2%).

At the monthly level, prices on average down by 0.3%

In December, consumer prices were on average 0.3% lower than a month before.

Cheaper than in the previous month were products and services in the group recreation and culture (by 2.7%), which lowered inflation by 0.3 p.p. Additional 0.1 p.p. was added by lower prices of clothing and footwear (by 1.6%). All other price decreases in December contributed additional 0.2 p.p.

On the other hand, in December, compared to the previous month, prices went up in the groups restaurants and hotels (by 0.8%), food and non-alcoholic beverages (by 0.5%) and transport (by 0.4%), each contributing 0.1 p.p. to lower monthly deflation.

Harmonised indices of consumer prices

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this December the annual growth of consumer prices was 2.0% (a year ago 3.8%). The monthly price growth stood at −0.1%.

In one year, service prices increased on average by 3.6% and goods prices by 1.1%. Non-durable goods prices went up by 1.7% and semi-durable goods prices by 1.4%, while durable goods prices went down by 1.7%.

Annual inflation rates in November 2024 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in November the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.2% (a month before 2.0%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.5% (a month before 2.3%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Ireland (0.5%) and the highest in Romania (5.4%); in Slovenia it stood at 1.6%.

Higher excise duties raised annual inflation by 0.3 p.p.

At the annual level, the difference between the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) and the harmonized index of consumer prices at constant tax rates (HICP-CT) was 0.3 p.p.

This year, excise duties on tobacco products increased once and excise duties on petroleum products changed several times.

The annual growth of consumer prices was 2.0%, but in the case of unchanged excise duties it would have been lower (1.7%).
