Life expectancy at birth of men and women the highest so far
With the sustainable development goals indicators we monitor Slovenia's progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. There are 17 goals, divided into five elements: people, prosperity, planet, peace and partnership.
9th year of monitoring sustainable development goals
This year marks nine years since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, a development action plan that balances the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.
Presented below are the values of indicators with which we monitor the progress in achieving the sustainable development goals for Slovenia. If not stated otherwise, the data refer to 2023.
PEOPLE – End poverty and hunger in all forms and ensure dignity and equality

1) The at-risk-of-poverty rate in Slovenia was 12.7%, 0.6 of a percentage point higher than the year before. About 264,000 people in Slovenia were living below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold.
2) Slightly less than EUR 22.8 million of government budget allocations for research and development were allocated to agriculture. Budget increased for the fourth year in a row.
3) Boys born in Slovenia in 2023 can expect to live 78.9 years, while girls can expect to live 84.7 years. Life expectancy at birth of men and women is the highest so far.
4) Employment rate of recent graduates was 85.4%, which is 1.2 percentage points more than a year earlier. It was higher in men (87.4%) than in women (82.8%). Compared to the previous year, it decreased by 0.2 of a percentage point for men, and increased by 2.6 percentage points for women.
5) The share of women in senior management positions increased by 3.7 percentage points over the previous year and was 25.9%.

6) The values of nitrate levels in groundwater samples decreased from 11.4 to 11.2 mg NO3/l compared to the previous year. This is the least during the 20-year observed period. The second lowest nitrate levels were recorded in 2012, namely 11.3 mg NO3/l.
12) The recycling rate of waste excluding mineral wastes decreased by 5.2 percentage points to 74.2%. However, the landfill rate of waste excluding mineral wastes grew by 0.7 of a percentage point to 5.4%.
13) Slovenia reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 24% between 1986 and 2022.
14) Marine fishing catch of Slovenian fishermen was almost the same as the year before. They caught slightly more than 107 tonnes of fresh marine organisms.
15) Forest area as a share of total land area of the country was 58.0%, the same as in the previous year. In the last twenty years, the share was the largest in the 2008–2010 period, when it stood at 58.5%.
PROSPERITY – Ensure prosperous and fulfilling lives in harmony with nature

7) The final energy consumption in households per capita decreased by 5.9% compared to a year earlier and was 5,836 kWh.
8) The share of young people neither in employment nor in education and training was 7.3% and decreased by 0.9 of a percentage point over the previous year.
9) Gross domestic expenditure for research and development represented 2.13% of gross domestic product of Slovenia, which was by 0.03 of a percentage point more than in the previous year.
10) 7,261 asylum applications were submitted and 129 were granted. Compared to the previous year, there were 7% more applications, but 57% fewer granted asylum applications.
11) 107 people died as a result of transport accidents, 8 more than the year before, when the fewest people died. Still, this is the second lowest number ever.
PEACE – Foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies

16) The perceived level of public sector corruption or the corruption perception index was 56 on a scale from 0 to 100. The index was the same as the year before.
PARTNERSHIP – Implement the agenda through a solid global partnership

17) Slovenia spent 0.24% of its gross national income on official development assistance or by 0.05 of a percentage point less than in the previous year, when the share was the highest so far.
