Tourism travels of domestic population, 3rd quarter 2024
Private trips abroad predominated this summer
In July, August and September 2024, 60% of Slovenian residents aged 15 or more went on at least one tourist trip. They made 2.7 million tourist trips and generated 14 million overnight stays.
Almost two thirds of Slovenian residents travelled
During the summer months, around a million or 60% of Slovenian residents aged 15 or more went on at least one tourist trip (private and/or business), which is 1 percentage point more than in the 3rd quarter of last year.
The largest share of residents who travelled belonged to the 45–64 age group (37%), followed by those aged 25–44 (35%). The lowest participation was recorded among residents aged 65 or more (15%) and 15–24 (13%).
The number of trips abroad up, in Slovenia down
In the summer months, residents of Slovenia made 2.9 million tourist trips. Almost all trips were private (2.7 million). Compared to the same period last year, 4% fewer private trips were made.
Almost two thirds (64%) of private trips were made abroad. As regards the foreign destinations, trips to neighbouring Croatia predominated (67%), followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina (7%) and Italy (5%).
89% of all private trips were made by passenger motor vehicles, followed by plane (5%) and bus (4%).
Non-rented accommodations dominated in Slovenia, rented abroad
In the observed period, residents of Slovenia on private trips made around 14 million overnight stays, the majority of which (81%) abroad.
On a tourist trip at home or abroad, they spent on average five overnight stays, with tourist trips abroad lasting longer. Data on private trips show the same, the average length was 5.2 overnight stays (2.8 in Slovenia and 6.6 abroad).
The largest share of tourists on private trips in Slovenia preferred to stay with their relatives and friends (32%), followed by own holiday home (29%). Abroad, they preferred to stay in private rooms, dwelling, etc. (34%), followed by hotels and similar accommodations (18%).
Average daily expenditure of tourists on private trips was EUR 77. Expenditures on trips in Slovenia amounted to around EUR 65 per person per day, and on trips abroad to EUR 79 per person per day.
Half of Slovenian residents went on same-day visits in Slovenia
Slovenian residents aged 15 or more made in the observed period around 2.9 million same-day visits in Slovenia and 557,000 same-day visits abroad. On average, they spent EUR 79 per person in Slovenia, and EUR 119 per person abroad.
Revised quarterly data for 2021 and 2022
Due to a technical error that occurred during data collection while implementing a new procedure, we are also publishing in the SiStat Database revised quarterly data on tourism travels and their characteristics for 2021 and 2022.
In the 3rd quarter 2021, domestic tourists went on 2.5 million private trips. Average daily expenditure per tourist was EUR 64 in Slovenia, and EUR 68 abroad. In the 3rd quarter 2022, 2.1 million private trips were made. Average daily expenditure per turist was EUR 56 in Slovenia, and EUR 64 abroad.
