Key comparisons with the 3rd quarter of 2023

  • 6% more waste collected in total,
  • 5% more construction waste collected,
  • 6% more municipal waste collected,
  • a tenth less waste planned for recycling,
  • almost a quarter less waste planned for backfilling,
  • a tenth less municipal waste planned for landfilling.

Much less waste planned for backfilling

Almost 3.5 million tonnes of waste was collected in total, or 6% more than in the same period last year. Of this, 83% or almost 2.9 million tonnes was construction waste, which increased by 5%. Almost 590,000 tonnes of waste was planned for recycling, which was a tenth less than in the same period last year. Of this, the amount of waste recovered in biogas plants fell by 16%, while in compost plants it increased by a fifth. A little less than 39,000 tonnes of waste was intended for energy recovery representing an 84% increase. The amount of waste planned to be backfilled decreased by more than half a million tonnes or 23%, while 41,000 tonnes of waste was planned for landfilling, which is a tenth less than in the same period last year. The amount of municipal waste planned to be landfilled decreased by 7%.

Among separately collected municipal waste, largest share of biodegradable waste

Between July and September, 278,000 tonnes of municipal waste was collected, which is 6% more than in the same period last year. Of this, more than a fifth was mixed municipal waste, which remained approximately at the same level. The highest growth was among paper and cardboard (by more than a quarter), followed by metallic waste (by almost a fifth).

The third quarter recorded the highest share of separately collected municipal waste since we had started monitoring quarterly waste statistics in 2022. In total, slightly less than 79% of municipal waste was collected separately. Among these, the largest share – a quarter – was biodegradable waste, 24% was paper and cardboard and 13% was mixed and composite packaging. More than a tenth of all separately collected municipal waste was also wood and wooden packaging, and bulky waste.
