Arrivals of foreign tourists up by 15% over October last year
In October, accommodation establishments reported almost 472,000 tourist arrivals and 1.1 million overnight stays. Compared to last year, there were 12% more arrivals and 8% more overnight stays.
More foreign and about the same number of domestic tourists
Domestic tourists generated almost 133,000 arrivals (3% more than last October) and just over 350,000 overnight stays (1% more). The largest number of overnight stays among domestic tourists, almost a quarter, was generated by those in the age group of 65+ years. Their average length of stay was 4.8 nights and was the longest among all age groups.
Foreign tourists generated almost 339,000 arrivals (15% more than last October) and 772,000 overnight stays (11% more). They generated 69% of all tourist overnight stays. The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was also generated in the age group 65+ years. The average length of stay for this group was 2.4 nights and was the longest among all age groups.
The structure of foreign tourists very similar to last October
As last October, the largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated by tourists from Germany, just over 106,000 or 14% of all foreign overnight stays. The number represents a 14% growth compared to last year. The most represented age group was 65+ years, and the largest numbers of their overnight stays were generated in municipalities Ljubljana, Piran and Bled.
With just over 94,000 overnight stays (12% of all foreign overnight stays) guests from Austria ranked second. They spent the largest numbers of their nights in municipalities Piran, Moravske Toplice and Ljubljana, the most represented age group was also 65+ years.
They were followed by tourists from Italy, Croatia, the USA and Hungary.
Compared to the year before, the number of overnight stays among the mentioned foreign markets increased the most for tourists from Hungary (by 20%). The number decreased only for tourists from Croatia (by 3%).
The largest share of stays this time in health (spa) resorts
In health (spa) resorts, 24% of tourist overnight stays were recorded, the most popular being municipality Moravske Toplice. They were followed by mountain resorts (20%), with Bled being the top visited destination, seaside resorts (19%), with Piran as the most popular, and municipality Ljubljana (also 19%).
Domestic tourists generated the largest share of overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (43% of domestic overnight stays), with Moravske Toplice, Brežice and Podčetrtek being the most popular municipalities.
As in last October, foreign tourists most often opted for Ljubljana (27% of foreign overnight stays). The average length of their stays there was 2 nights.
Compared to the previous year, the number of tourist overnight stays went up in all above-mentioned types of municipalities, the most in municipality Ljubljana (by 16%).
More than half of all overnight stays in hotels
Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (just over 621,000 or 55% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (19%) and camping sites (6%).
Compared to last October, the number of overnight stays in hotels went up by 10% and in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings by 17%, but went down in camping sites by 7%.
In the first ten months of this year more foreign but slightly fewer domestic overnight stays
From January to October, tourists generated almost 5.9 million arrivals (6% more than in the same period last year) and almost 15.3 million overnight stays (4% more).
Foreign tourists generated 11.4 million or 74% of all overnight stays. That was 6% more than in the same period last year. Domestic tourists generated 3.9 million overnight stays, 2% fewer than in the same period last year.
Interesting fact: During the autumn school holidays, domestic tourists most often opted for coastal Piran and some health (spa) resorts
According to the experimental statistics Daily tourism flow in Slovenia, the most domestic overnight stays in the last week of October (from Saturday, 26 October to Thursday, 31 October) were generated in the coastal municipality Piran, namely 16,500. The number represented a third of all domestic overnight stays in Piran in October. It was followed by some health (spa) resorts – Brežice, Moravske Toplice and Podčetrtek, where domestic tourists in total generated 25,300 overnight stays.
