The number of employed persons slightly lower than in the previous quarter

The number of persons in the labour force (i.e. employed and unemployed persons together) increased by 5,000. The number of employed persons decreased by almost 6,000, from 998,000 to 992,000 or by 0.5% compared to the previous quarter, but increased by 0.1% compared to the same period last year.

Compared to the previous quarter, the number of employed men decreased by 3,000 or 0.5% and the number of employed women also by 3,000 or 0.6%. Nevertheless, there were more employed men (55%) than women (45%).

The employment rate also decreased. In the third quarter of 2024, it was 56.1%, 0.7 of a percentage point lower than in the previous quarter and 0.5 of a percentage point lower than in the same period last year.

One of the goals of sustainable development is employment rate of persons aged 20–64 above 75% by the year 2030. In the second quarter of 2024, it was 77.4%.

85.3% of employed persons were employees, 12.9% were self-employed and 1.8% helped on the family farm or in the family business. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of employees decreased by 0.4%, while the number of self-employed increased by 1.4%.

More unemployed persons looking for employment in the last two months

The unemployment rate has remained below 4% since the fourth quarter of 2022. In the observed quarter, however, the unemployment rate increased to 4.4% and reached the value at the beginning of 2022. There were 46,000 unemployed persons, 55% were men and 45% were women.

Compared to the previous quarter, the number of unemployed persons looking for employment in the last two months increased from 11,000 to 17,000. Among them, 64,4% are those who are not (yet) registered with the Employment Service of Slovenia and who searched for work on its website, through advertisements or in another way.

Emoployment and unemployment among young people higher

As is typical for the 3rd quarter, we noticed an increase in the number of employed persons among young people aged 15 to 24. Compared to the previous quarter, the number of employed persons in this age group increased by 12,000 (or by one fifth), and compared to the same period last year by 2,000. The employment rate for this age group increased by 5 percentage points. The reason for the increase can be attributed to the increase in persons in student work during the summer months.

Despite the increase in the number of employed persons and the employment rate in this age group, there was also an increase in the number and rate of the unemployed persons in the observed quarter. This is also not a very special phenomenon, as the school year ends at the end of August, which means that those who have finished school can look for (new) employment from July on.

The number of unemployed young persons increased by 5,000 – from 7,000 to 12,000. The biggest increase was recorded among men, where the number doubled (from 4,000 to 8,000), while among women, the number remained the same as in the previous quarter. The unemployment rate increased by almost 4 percentage points to 14.1%. Compared to the same period last year, the unemployment rate increased by 3 percentage points. Among the unemployed persons aged 15 to 24, over two-thirds (65%) self-identified as students, 28% as unemployed, and the rest with another status.
