Organic utilised agricultural area almost a tenth larger than a year ago
Organic utilised agricultural area in 2023 was 46,195 hectares, 10% more than the year before. Additional 8,408 hectares were in the process of conversion to organic. Together around 11% of all utilised agricultural area was cultivated organically (with certificate and in the process of conversion).
The number of organic farms down, the number of farms in conversion up
In 2023, the system of control of organic production comprised 3,864 agricultural holdings (i.e. those with a certificate or in the process of conversion), or 2% more than in the previous year.
The number of agricultural holdings in the process of conversion increased by 45% to 515, while the number of certified holdings decreased by 2% or 81 to 3,349.
In total, farms included in the system of control of organic production (with certificate and in the process of conversion) represented around 6% of all agricultural holdings in Slovenia. Together they cultivated around 54,600 hectares (around 46,200 hectares with a certificate), which represent around 11% of all utilised agricultural area. Among organically certified land, the largest area was intendent for permanent grassland (42,432 hectares), followed by arable land (8,254 hectares) and orchards (2,309 hectares).
Average certified holding cultivated in 2023 around 14 hectares of utilised agricultural area, of which slightly less than 11 hectares of permanent grassland, 2 hectares of arable land and around 1 hectare of permanent crops. Compared to holdings in the conversion process, in terms of total utilised agricultural area certified holdings were smaller on average by 16%.
Fewer all animal species, except goats and beehives
In 2023, around 39,500 cattle was reared on certified farms, which is similar to the previous year (145 fewer). A sharp drop was detected by pigs (by 15% to 2,710 animals). The number of sheep was 7% lower (around 32,000), and of goats 8% higher (around 7,100). The number of beehives increased the most in comparison to 2022, i.e. by 120% to 7,865 beehives.
Amount of meat from organic farming similar to 2022
The total amount of meat from organic farming weighed 538 tonnes, which is similar to 2022. Beef decreased by 5% (to 459 tonnes) and pork increased by 5% (to 40 tonnes). Poultry meat weighed around 34 tonnes, which is a 79% increase compared to 2022.
