Tourist arrivals and overnight stays, September 2024
In September, a slightly different structure of foreign tourists than in previous two summer months
In September, there were almost 661,000 tourist arrivals and 1.6 million overnight stays in accommodation establishments, which was about the same as in the previous September. Tourists from the United States of America, who ranked third, generated a fifth more overnight stays than last year.
Fewer domestic, more foreign tourists
Domestic tourists generated almost 126,000 arrivals (16% fewer than last September) and just over 358,000 overnight stays (12% fewer). September is also marked by the end of summer school holidays. The largest number of overnight stays among domestic tourists, more than a quarter, was generated by those in the age group of 65+ years. Their average length of stay was 5 nights and was the longest among all age groups.
Foreign tourists generated just over 535,000 arrivals (3% more than last September) and 1.2 million overnight stays (5% more). They generated 78% of all tourist overnight stays. The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated in the age group 55–64 years. The average length of stay for this group was 2.3 nights.
Among markets with the most overnight stays also the USA and the UK
The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated by tourists from Germany, almost 280,000 or 23% of all foreign overnight stays. The most represented age group was 55–64 years. Unlike last September, they spent the largest number of their nights in municipalities Piran and Ljubljana, followed by Bovec, which was their most popular destination last year.
Tourists from the United States of America ranked third regarding the number of overnight stays. They generated almost 70,000 overnight stays (6% of all foreign overnight stays), the largest number in municipality Ljubljana (44% of their overnight stays) and Bled (a fifth). The largest number of overnights stays was generated in the age group 65+ years.
Tourists from the United Kingdom, who ranked fifth with just over 61.000 overnight stays (5% of foreign overnight stays), also spent the largest number of their nights in municipalities Bled (29% of their overnight stays) and Ljubljana (28%). The most represented age group was 65+ years.
Compared to the year before, the number of overnight stays increased by 21% for tourists from the USA and by 11% for those from the UK.
According to the experimental statistics Daily tourism flow in Slovenia, the largest number of tourists from the USA in Ljubljana was recorded on Sunday, 15 September, and in Bled on Friday, 20 September. The largest number of tourist arrivals from the UK in Ljubljana was recorded on Thursday, 12 September, and in Bled the day before, 11 September.
Almost a third of all overnight stays in mountain resorts
In mountain resorts, 31% of tourist overnight stays were recorded, the most popular being municipality Bled. They were followed by seaside resorts (21%), with Piran being the most popular, municipality Ljubljana (17%) and health (spa) resorts (16%), with Moravske Toplice as the most popular municipality.
Domestic tourists generated the largest share of overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (38% of domestic overnight stays), with Moravske Toplice, Brežice and Podčetrtek being the most popular municipalities. The average length of stay in these three destinations was about 3 nights.
Foreign tourists most often opted for mountain resorts (36% of foreign overnight stays), with Bled, Bohinj and Kranjska Gora being the most popular. The average length of their stays there was about 2 nights.
Compared to the previous September, among the mentioned types of municipalities, the number of tourist overnight stays went up in Ljubljana (by 13%) and health (spa) resorts (by 1%), while in mountain and seaside resorts it went down by 5% and 1%, respectively.
The average length of stay in hotels 2.4 nights
Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (almost 699,000 or 44% of all overnight stays, the average lenght of stay was 2.4 nights), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (24%) and camping sites (13%).
Compared to last September, the number of overnight stays in hotels went up by 1% and in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings by 7%, but went down in camping sites by 9%.
In nine months of this year more foreign but fewer domestic tourists
From January to September, tourists generated almost 5.5 million arrivals (5% more than in the same period last year) and 14.1 million overnight stays (4% more).
Foreign tourists generated 10.6 million or 75% of all overnight stays. That was 6% more than in the same period last year. Domestic tourists generated 3.5 million overnight stays, 2% fewer than in the same period last year.
Interesting fact: 24,000 tourists visited Slovenia on the World Tourism Day
According to the experimental statistics Daily tourism flow in Slovenia, on Friday, 27 September 2024, when we celebrate the World Tourism Day, the largest number of foreign tourist arrivals was recorded in accommodation establishments in Ljubljana (a quarter of their arrivals on that day). Domestic tourists visited Piran, Brežice and Moravske Toplice the most on this day.
