R&D expenditure at EUR 1.4 billion, 1.1% more than in 2022
In 2023, EUR 1.4 billion was allocated for R&D, with nearly 26,000 individuals working in the field.
R&D expenditure higher than a year earlier
Gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) in Slovenia in 2023 reached nearly EUR 1.4 billion. Compared to 2022, expenditure grew by EUR 170 million or about 1.1%. R&D expenditure accounted for 2.13% of Slovenia's GDP1 in 2023 and 2.10% in 2022.
GERD structure by sector of performance similar to the previous year
The largest share of funds for conducting R&D in Slovenia is spent in the business enterprise sector: approximately EUR 938 million represented 69% of GERD in 2023. Expenditure for R&D in the government sector represented 16%, in the higher education sector 14% and in the private non-profit sector 1% of GERD.
In 2023, most R&D activities were funded by businesses and the government. The business enterprise sector provided EUR 647 million for R&D, accounting for 47% of GERD, while government funding amounted to EUR 378 million making up 28% of GERD.

A total of 25,863 people were involved in R&D activities across all sectors in 2023, of whom 17,587 were researchers. In one year, the number of researchers increased by 572. The largest share of researchers was employed in the business enterprise sector (50%), and the smallest in the private non-profit sector (1%).
