Average yield of maize and late potatoes is expected

The data on yield forecast as of 5 September 2024 confirm the already published data on expected yield of maize for grain and silage maize as of 31 July 2024 indicating good yield of this most widespread crop in Slovenia. According to the latest data, the expected average yield is 9 tonnes per hectare. This is comparable to the ten-year average yield, as well as to last year's.

The expected average yield of silage maize is 44.2 tonnes per hectare, which is 6% more than a year ago and slightly less than the ten-year average (by 3%).

The total output of late potatoes should weigh around 70,400 tonnes, which is by a tenth more compared to last year’s average production. The average expected yield of late potatoes should amount to 27.4 tonnes per hectare, which is by 6% more than the ten-year average.

1) Yield forecast.

Good harvest of oil plants is expected

According to latest data, a good harvest of sunflowers is expected. Average yield should amount to 2.4 tonnes per hectare, which is comparable to the ten-year average and by a fifth more than last year.

Average yield of dry pumpkin seeds is expected to be 0.6 tonnes per hectare, which is the same as the ten-year average and by a half more than last year.

Soya was planted on the largest area ever, almost 4,200 hectares. Average yield of 2.7 tonnes per hectare is comparable to the ten-year average. According to data, the biggest total output since 1991 is expected – it should amount to around 11,300 tonnes.

Low output of hops

This year’s weather conditions had a negative impact on hops. From a similar area as last year, hop producers in Slovenia are expected to harvest 17% less hops. The expected average yield of 1.4 tonnes per hectare is about 14% lower than the last ten-year average.

Harvest of late fruits above average

The harvest of apples and pears, the most important late fruit species in our country, should be abundant this year in both orchard plantations and extensive orchards.

The expected average yield of apples in orchard plantations should weigh 28.6 tonnes, which is by a quarter more than the ten-year average. The total output of apples is expected to be around 54,500 tonnes. Apples in extensive orchards should also do well; average yield of 46.5 kilograms per tree is almost 45% better than the ten-year average.

Average yield of pears in orchard plantations (expected to weigh 19.3 tonnes per hectare) should be by 40% bigger than the ten-year average. Pears in extensive orchards should also do well – an expected average yield of 30.6 kilograms per tree is by a third bigger than the ten-year average.

Winegrowers expect a smaller grape harvest

According to the yield forecast, this year’s total output of grapes (around 72,000 tonnes) is 8% lower than last year’s output. The expected average yield of white grapes of 5.1 tonnes per hectare is by a fifth lower than the last ten-year average. We also expect below average harvest of red grapes – 5.2 tonnes per hectare is by 17% less compared to the last ten-year average yield.
