More cows’ milk collected than last August

More cows’ milk was collected from agricultural holdings this August than a year ago. In the same comparison, dairies decreased the production of all milk products except cheese.

Quantity of collected milk higher year-on-year

Registered purchasers collected about 46,400 tonnes of cows’ milk. This was 2% less than in July, but 1.6% more than in August 2023. In the first eight months, the amount of milk purchased was only 0.1% lower than last year in the same period.

With the exception of cheese, lower production of milk products 

In the observed month, dairies produced almost 4% more cheese than a year ago. The production of other groups of milk products decreased: of butter by almost 12%, of drinking milk by more than 7%, of acidified milk by more than 4% and of cream by more than 3%.

At the monthly level, too, a decrease in production of milk products, except for drinking milk

Compared to July, dairies also decreased the production of all groups of milk products except drinking milk. The production of butter decreased by a quarter, of acidified milk by almost 11%, of cream by almost 4% and of cheese by almost 2%. Drinking milk production increased by more than 15%. 

In the EU, less milk collected this July

Dairies in the EU collected 0.5% less cows’ milk than last July. The quantity of collected milk increased the most in France, Poland and Italy, and decreased the most in Ireland and Germany. 

More dairy products in the EU in the first seven months, except for butter

From January to July, dairies in the EU mostly produced more dairy products than in the same period last year. The production of cream and acidified milk increased by around 4% each, of cheese by more than 3% and of drinking milk by almost 1%. On the other hand, almost 2% less butter was produced.

The price of raw milk up in July
 
In July, the price of raw milk in the EU increased by 0.4% to EUR 0.463/kg. In August and September, it is expected to increase further.
