Food waste, 2023

About a tenth more food waste than a year earlier

Significantly more food waste was generated in food production and almost the same in food stores, food services and households. A resident of Slovenia discarded on average 78 kilograms of food.

More food waste generated mainly in food production

Last year, 164,803 tonnes of food waste was generated. The total amount was 9% higher than a year before. Most of the increase can be attributed to the higher amount of food waste in the food production. This doubled compared to the previous year due to the discarded larger quantities of materials unsuitable for consumption or processing. More food waste was also generated in food stores (by 7%) and households (by 2%).

In the previous year, too, the largest share of food waste was generated in households (44%). 34% of all food waste was thrown away in food service, 13% in food production, and the least (9%) in food stores. SURS estimates that the share of the edible part of food waste decreased by 3 percentage points to 37%.

In total, three quarters of food waste treated in biogas and composting plants

The largest share of food waste was treated anaerobically in biogas plants (41%), followed by aerobic treatment in composting plants (34%). 22% of food waste was biologically stabilised before being disposed in plants for the mechanical and biological treatment of municipal waste. A little less than 3% was processed with other methods, such as incineration, oil refining and other biological recovery processes.
