In 2023, 1.3 billion international tourist arrivals were generated in the world. In Slovenia foreign tourists generated 72% of overnight stays. They visit Slovenia because it is a safe country.

This year's theme of the World Tourism Day is Tourism and peace, with which the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) wants to highlight the importance of tourism’s role as a catalyst for fostering peace and understanding between nations and cultures and in supporting reconciliation processes.

1.3 billion international tourist arrivals in the world

According to UNWTO data, in 2023 international tourist arrivals reached 1.3 billion, which is 11% fewer than in the record year 2019. More than half (709 million) of international tourist arrivals were in Europe, which remains the leading global tourist destination.

In 13 EU-27 Member States foreign tourists made more overnight stays than domestic
 
Destinations whose tourist visits to a greater extent depend on foreign visitors are much more vulnerable in the case of larger unexpected events (natural disasters, pandemics, wars). 

In 2023, foreign tourists in EU-27 Member States generated 47% of all overnight stays and domestic 53%. In 13 Member States foreign tourists made more overnight stays than domestic ones. Foreign overnight stays represented more than 90% of all overnight stays in Malta, Croatia and Cyprus. In Slovenia, 72% of all overnight stays were generated by foreign tourists, which ranks Slovenia sixth in the EU-27.

The share of foreign tourists in Slovenia is rising

In 2023, foreign tourists in Slovenia generated almost 11.6 million overnight stays, which is the highest number so far. 

Between 2010 and 2019 the importance of foreign tourists for Slovene tourism constantly increased – in 2010 they generated 56% of all overnight stays, and in 2019 72%. After that two years marked by the COVID-19 pandemic followed, when domestic tourists prevailed (also because of tourist vauchers for domestic population). In 2023, the share of foreign overnight stays increased to 72%, the same level as in 2019.

Structure of overnight stays of foreign tourists by countries is changing

The structure of overnight stays of foreign tourists by countries changed in the 2010–2023 period. In 2010, the largest share of foreign overnight stays was generated by Italian tourists (19%), followed by tourists from Austria and Germany. In 2023, the largest share of foreign overnight stays was generated by tourists from Germany (16%), followed by Italy (9%) and Austria (8%). In 2010, overnight stays of foreign tourists from top three countries represented 43% of all foreign overnight stays, while in 2023 overnight stays of tourists from these three countries represented 34% of foreign overnight stays.

One tenth of foreign overnight stays by tourists from non-European countries

In 2023, foreign tourists from non-European countries generated 1.2 million overnight stays or 10% of foreign overnight stays. Among them almost half of overnight stays were generated by tourists from Asia, one third by tourists from North America, and the fewest (3%) by tourists from Africa.

Foreign tourists visit Slovenia because it is a safe destination

In addition to natural beauties, foreign tourists in 2021/22, when the survey among foreign tourists was conducted, most often evaluated personal safety during the stay as a very important or important motive for visiting Slovenia. 

Personal safety is also one of the highest valued impressions about Slovenia. On the scale from 1 (very bad) to 5 (very good), foreign tourists evaluated personal safety during the stay with the average score of 4.1 in July–August 2021 and 4.4 in September–October 2021.

Croatia is the destination for half of private trips of Slovenian residents abroad

Residents of Slovenia aged 15 years or more went on 7.1 million private trips, on which they stayed in rented accommodation establishments as well as in free (own secondary home, at relatives or friends). 46% of private trips were in Slovenia, and 54% abroad. Among private trips abroad, the largest share were to Croatia (51%), followed by Bosnia and Hercegovina (13%), Italy (9%) and Austria (5%).
