Fewer persons in paid employment, continued growth in self-employed persons

The number of persons in employment declined in July, which was the second consecutive monthly decrease. The total number of persons in employment fell by about 3,000, with most significant declines in education and manufacturing.

Decrease in persons in paid employment, highest number of self-employed persons

In the observed month, the number of persons in employment decreased by 0.3%, totalling about 943,300. The number of persons in paid employment fell by around 3,300, representing a 0.4% decrease. Conversely, the number of self-employed persons grew for the sixth consecutive month, this time by just over 200 or 0.2%, reaching about 102,900, i.e. the highest number since we began observing register-based data on persons in employment.

The decline in the number of women in employment was more pronounced, by nearly 1,900, or 0.4%, nearly half of whom were in education. The number of men in employment also declined, by just over 1,100, or 0.2%, with just under half of this decrease occurring in manufacturing.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of persons in employment increased by 1.1%, with persons in paid employment up by 0.9% and self-employed persons up by 2.4%. The number of men and women in employment increased by 1.6% and 0.5%, respectively.

Decrease at the monthly level in two thirds of the sections of activities

Compared to June, the number of persons in employment declined in 14 sections of activities, while increasing in only 6. The largest decrease was observed in education, by 1,100 or 1.4%. Such a decrease is typical for summer months due to the expiration of fixed-term contracts and the completion of internships. We also observed a notable monthly decline in manufacturing, nearly 900 or 0.4%. On the other hand, the largest increase in persons in employment was in arts, entertainment and recreation, 38 or 0.2%.

Compared to July of the previous year, the number of persons in employment in education icreased for 1.8%, while in manufacturing the number was 0.3% lower.
