The number of persons in employment in fishery down
In 2023, 224 persons in employment were engaged in fishery economic activities or 7% fewer than in the previous year. The number of persons in employment in marine fishing decreased by 13%, and in mariculture and inland water fish farming by 5%.
Fewer persons in employment in marine fishing and aquaculture
We estimate that 61 persons in employment were engaged in marine fishing or 13% fewer than in the previous year. About 60% them were self-employed fishermen, and the rest were employed. Among all persons in employment in this type of fishing, more than half had full-time jobs.
163 persons were engaged in marine or inland water fish and shellfish farming or 5% fewer than the year before. The number of self-employed dropped by almost a third, while the number of employed persons (employed at legal or natural persons) was higher by 7%. About half of all persons in employment engaged in aquaculture had full-time jobs.
Production capacity in aquaculture larger
136 fishing vessels were registered, which is 4% more than the year before and 10% fewer compared to the ten-year average. The number of fishing vessels up to 11.9 m in length increased compared to the previous year, while the number of other vessels stayed the same. Their total gross tonnage slightly increased, to 668 GT, as did the total engine capacity – 8,422 kW, which is by 6% more than the year before.
Freshwater fish breeding ponds covered 244 hectares, which is comparable to previous year's area. The volume of ponds for breeding freshwater fish increased by 8% over the previous year to 85,000 cubic metres. This is the largest pool volume to date.
Compared to the previous year, the surface area of shellfish breeding increased by 3% to 59 hectares.
