One in four employees worked in a foreign inward affiliate
In 2022, foreign inward affiliates represented 3.9% of all observed enterprises in Slovenia. They generated 28.2% of total value added and employed 26.8% of all employees. The most economically important were under the control of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Absolute number relatively small …
A foreign inward affiliate is an enterprise resident in Slovenia over which an institutional unit that is not a resident in Slovenia has control. Controlling country means the resident country of the ultimate owner that can be a legal entity or a natural person.
Out of 194,940 active enterprises operating in 2022 in Slovenia in NACE sections B to S, except O and S94, 7,644 or 3.9% were foreign affiliates.
… but economic importance high
In 2022, foreign inward affiliates contributed more than a quarter (28.2%) to the total value added generated in Slovenia, which indicates the success of their operations. They also employed more than a quarter (26.8%) of all employees and generated more than a quarter of all gross investments (27.5%). Turnover of foreign inward affiliates accounted for almost a third of total turnover in Slovenia (31.0%).

In 2022, foreign inward affiliates were controlled by 107 different countries, mostly (90%) by European countries.
About half of foreign inward affiliates were controlled by EU-27 Member States.
In case of foreign control, there are strong links between neighbouring countries and it is obvious in many cases that enterprises invest first in markets close to them, either geographically, culturally or linguistically. Among foreign inward affiliates in Slovenia, the most numerous (more than half) were the affiliates of Italy, Serbia, Austria, the Russian Federation, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Germany.

The largest number of enterprises among foreign inward affiliates in Slovenia were engaged in activities belonging to the group of activities (by NACE) other services (49.1%). The second largest group was enterprises classified in trade (25.9%), followed by construction (13.0%) and industry (12.0%).
Almost half of the total gross investments and more than a third of value added generated by foreign inward affiliates in Slovenia were generated by industrial enterprises classified in NACE sections B, C, D and E; and they employed more than a third all employees in foreign inward affiliates.
