In July, 80% overnight stays generated by foreign tourists
The start of this year's main summer season was very similar to last year's regarding tourist flows in accommodation establishments. While there were slightly fewer domestic tourists, foreign generated about the same number of arrivals and overnight stays.
Almost 2.9 million tourist overnight stays
In July, slightly more than 1 million tourist arrivals and almost 2.9 million overnight stays were recorded in accommodation establishments, which was only 1% fewer than in July last year.
Domestic tourists generated slightly more than 152,000 arrivals (6% fewer than last July) and just over 563,000 overnight stays (7% fewer). Just like a year ago, they spent the largest number of nights in three Slovenian coastal municipalities: Piran, Izola and Ankaran.
This time the largest number of overnight stays among domestic tourists, almost a fifth, was generated by children in the age group of 7–14 years (time of summer school holidays). Their average length of stay was 4.5 nights.
Foreign tourists generated almost 874,000 arrivals and 2.3 million overnight stays, both about the same as last July. They spent the largest number of nights in municipality Ljubljana, followed by municipalities Piran and Bled, which are usually the most popular among foreign tourists. A third of foreign overnight stays was generated in these three municipalities.
The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated in the age group 35–44 years. The average length of stay for this group was 2.6 overnight stays.
The structure of foreign guests with the most overnight stays by country the same as last year
The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated by tourists from Germany, just over 375,000 or 16% of all foreign overnight stays. As last July, they spent the largest number of their nights in municipality Bovec. The most represented age group was 35–44 years.
Tourists from Czechia, who generated just over 225,000 overnight stays (10% of all foreign overnight stays), spent the largest number of their nights in municipality Piran. The largest number of overnights stays was generated in the age group 45–54 years.
Also a tenth of foreign overnight stays was generated by those from the Netherlands (220,000 overnight stays), who spent the largest number of their nights in Radovljica. The most represented age group was 7–14 years.
They were followed by tourists from Belgium (7%), Hungary (6%) and Austria (5%).
Compared to the year before, the number of overnight stays increased only for tourists from Hungary (by 4%) and Austria (by 2%).
For domestic tourists the most popular health (spa) resorts, for foreign mountain resorts
As regards the types of municipalities, 39% of tourist overnight stays was recorded in mountain resorts, the most popular being municipality Bled. They were followed by seaside resorts (21%), with Piran being the most popular, and health (spa) resorts (16%), with Brežice as the most popular municipality. 12% of all overnight stays were generated in municipality Ljubljana.
As in last July, domestic tourists generated the largest share of overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (34% of domestic overnight stays), while foreign tourists most often opted for mountain resorts (44% of foreign overnight stays).
Compared to the previous July, the number of tourist overnight stays went up only in Ljubljana (by 6%), where 58% of overnight stays were recorded in hotels and similar accommodation establishments.
Just like last year, only 1 percentage point fewer overnight stays in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings than in hotels
Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (almost 853,000 or 30% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (29%) and camping sites (22%).
While the number of overnight stays in hotels was about the same as last July, it went up in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (by 2%), but down in camping sites (by 2%).
In the first seven months more foreign overnight stays
This year tourists generated almost 3.6 million arrivals (3% more than in the same period last year) and almost 9.3 million overnight stays (1% more).
Foreign tourists generated 72% of all overnight stays. The largest number was generated by tourists from Germany, followed by tourists from Austria and Italy. Domestic tourists generated almost 2.6 million overnight stays, 3% fewer than in the same period last year, and foreign tourists 6.7 million, which was 3% more.
