More passenger vehicles at road border crossings

The share of rail goods transport in total inland goods transport continued to decline last year. A third more passengers travelled through Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož airports. Almost 50% more passengers arrived in or departed from Slovenian ports.

More passengers carried in all transport modes

In 2023, more passengers were carried in all passenger transport modes. In urban public scheduled transport, 43.7 million passengers were carried or 29% more. In road public scheduled transport, which includes interurban and international scheduled transport, 25.9 million passengers were carried, which was 8% more than in the previous year.

Almost 15.7 million passengers were carried in railway transport. In comparison with 2022, this is a 6% increase. The total number of passenger-kilometres performed increased by a fifth over the previous year and reached 990 million.

More than 1.3 million passengers travelled through Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož airports, which was a third more than a year earlier.

153,000 passengers arrived in or departed from ports, which was almost 50% more than in the previous year. On cruise ships 125,000 passengers were counted, which was 67% more, while passenger ships had 28,000 passengers, which was 2% fewer than the year before.



The share of rail goods transport in total inland goods transport again slightly lower

Slovenian road goods vehicles carried 105.1 million tonnes of goods or 1% more than in 2022: in national transport 68.4 million tonnes of goods or 4% more, and in international transport 36.7 million tonnes, or 3% less.

22.5 billion tonne-kilometres were performed or 7% fewer: in national transport 3.1 billion tonne-kilometres or 21% more, and in international transport 19.4 billion or 11% less.

Almost 19.2 million tonnes of goods were carried by train and 4,629 million tonne-kilometres were performed. Railway goods transport in tonnes and also in tonne-kilometres decreased by 6% compared to the previous year.

The share of rail goods transport in total inland goods transport was 26.5%, 0.3 of a percentage point lower than the year before. The indicator value shows a longer downward trend.

  

In the port of Koper 21.1 million tonnes of goods were handled, which was 6% less than in 2022. 15.5 million tonnes were unloaded, and 5.6 million tonnes were loaded. Among the individual types of cargo handled in 2023, the heaviest cargo was in containers, weighing 8.9 million tonnes.

Compared to a year earlier, airport goods traffic went down by 8% to 11,438 tonnes.

Most vehicles entered or exited Slovenia at road border crossings with Croatia

76 million passenger vehicles entered or exited Slovenia through road border crossings last year, of which 32 million crossed the border with Croatia, 21 million with Italy, 20 million with Austria and 3 million with Hungary. Passenger traffic went up by 17% over the previous year.

17 million goods vehicles entered or exited Slovenia at road border crossings, of which 6 million crossed the border with Croatia, 4.5 million with Italy, 4.5 million with Austria and 2 million with Hungary. Compared to the previous year, the number of goods vehicles increased by a tenth.

More road motor vehicles and vehicle kilometres

At the end of last year, there were almost 1.7 million registered road motor vehicles, 2% more than the year before. National vehicles performed 22.3 billion vehicle kilometres on national and foreign road territory. In one year the volume of traffic of national vehicles went up by 4%.

The volume of traffic also increased on the Slovenian road network. Road traffic on national road territory was 21.5 billion vehicle kilometres performed by national and foreign road motor vehicles, which was 5% more than the year before.

The motorisation rate is still increasing and passenger cars are getting old

In 2023, Slovenia recorded the highest motorization rate (579 registered passenger cars per 1,000 population) and on average the oldest cars (11.1 years) so far. The motorisation rate was the lowest in the Zasavska statistical region (550). On average, the least old were passenger cars in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (10.3 years).

The renewal rate of passenger car fleet increased

The share of first registrations of new passenger cars among all registered passenger cars in 2023 was 3.9%, 0.1 of a percentage point higher than a year earlier. The renewal rate of passenger cars (passenger car fleet) thus increased again since 2018. It was the highest in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (6.1%), and the lowest in the Goriška statistical region (2.1%). As regards types of road vehicles, the renewal rate for motorcycles was the highest (7.7%), and for tractors the lowest (2.1%).



First time registered used passenger cars on average almost 6 years old

Last year, used passenger cars registered for the first time in Slovenia, i.e. those that had already been registered outside Slovenia, were on average 5.8 years old. Since 2008, the year we started calculating this indicator, their average age at the first registration in Slovenia increased by 1.2 years.
